Naked picture of my wife

Before Phil chokes on his red wine and thinks "What the heck is happening to LJN...", this is a very serious subject and one perhaps the guys might be tempted to gloss over so hence the catchy topic name.

And if you are thinking, where is the picture, it is towards the end of this post (I think you will agree quite a graphic picture but what a good looking woman).

If you search LJN for First Aid, you will see quite a few postings.  We all know how important it is and hopefully what the HSE guidelines / requirements are.

I recently attended an first aid course to get re-certified and was quite shocked at how techniques have changed, to be fair, the course was more geared towards emergency first aid and of course the HSE requirements.

As a result of this, I have created a separate folder covering all “first aid” risks for each type of equipment used / job.  These are of course included within my risk assessments but by also having this separated it helps to focus your attention as to just how dangerous our profession is and more importantly allows me to have a check list of what first aid equipment must be on board the vans.

We all probably take our life for granted and think that an accident will never happen to us but as an example, my wife slipped on ice nearly two years ago come March.  The photo shows the damage to her spinal chord area.  Whilst the MRI scan shows damage it can’t be proven 100% that this was due to her little slip or if this was the trigger for all her problems.  But as one of her consultants said, it is pretty damn lightly to be!

So if a slip on the ice can cause so much problems just think what falling off a ladder would do! And as most of us use machinery of some kind the risks become even greater.  Bleeding to death in 90 seconds drums it home as to how quick you have to react to a major incident.

For those working in remote locations where perhaps mobile signals are limited, seriously consider changing your network provider or investigate getting a signal booster.  Being able to call the emergency services immediately is so vital.

If you haven’t yet done any formal first aid training, I urge you to get this booked up, you never know when you will need it, it could just save yours or someone’s life and if you have employees check the HSE requirements out!

    Hi Graeme

Thanks for posting this. It's a stark warning to all of us how potentially fragile our health is.

Accidents like your wife's change lives forever and if we can all help each other by raising awareness of health issues, accidents and health and safety then it's got to be a good think.

  • very important ,  potentials are so high in our line of work.

    Too true Grahame.

If you want to see what can and does happen in our industry go visit th HSE website and either look at the reports or sign up for their info/update emails.

One thing for sure, make sure you are not having breakfast etc when you read the gory details. Very sobering.

Separately, one my guys has recently broke his hand (after his kid shut it in the car door). It was stunning how 'disabling' it has been for him. Does make you think when your physical ability is so key to working in this industry.
