Nail guns

Hi there guys hoping for some help. I am looking for a nail gun predominately for feather edge fencing. Need to be able to fire 45mm nails (max) into the arris rails and about 25mm nails into the counter rail. I guess the options are a coil nail gun running off a compressor, a Paslode or something like the Tacwise ranger(cordless and no gas) At The moment I am favouring a coil nail gun with compressor. Anyone have any experience / thoughts on this? All advice gratefully received.

  • Id go with the Paslode I have the IM350, it works fine on te fencing, you just use 55m nails instead and just have to be more accurate with getting the nails on centre. Also being a gas nailer rather than compressor powered you have total freedom on site and you dont have to lug a heave compressor around with you!

What other jobs do you do that might need a nailer?

I think the IM350 is retailing at around the £450 ATM.

  • I have the paslode and I am going to get a compressor and coil gun to replace it fo nailing the boards up.

The paslode is too heavy and too expensive for the nails and gas

I will of course still use it for the rails

Nail guns working off of a compressor are much lighter and less tiring to use than a Paslode or equivalent.

But a Paslode is infinitely more port

But a Paslode is infinitely more portable and you do not need to run a power supply to it (although its batteries will need to be recharged from time to time)

But you can also run loads of different tools off of a compressor...

    Success!
  • I have the paslode Im350 which I use for my fencing. One problem with it is the minimum nail size is 51mm, usually overcome by firing at an angle however when it comes to replace it I will be going for a compressor + coil gun. 99% of my work is domestic so it's never a problem to have a power supply for a compressor.

I would be very interested to hear how you get on with whatever you choose as there are so many compressors on the market.

  • can anyone recomend a good nail gun for concrete?

,so i can nail mt metal striiping to the concrete

  • Hi Folks

I have loads of feathered edge pales to fix (approx. 500) - bought at a timber auction by the way!

I have just bought an 8 bar, 50 litre air compressor as follows:

    Wolf Air

Arrived in good time from placing order. Have not started it up yet!

Shopping around on the internet, the following frame nailer kept cropping up so I ordered one yesterday and am awaiting delivery:

    Silverline

I ordered some of their 50mm galv nails to get started, but for future orders I am going to investigate 34 degree paper collated nails sold at TradePoint (B&Q) as there appears to be some good deals there and it appears that these nails are pretty much universal with most nailers. I went to a very good tool shop in Hull, called (beleive it or not) Hull Power Tools and the guy there really new his stuff regarding nailers etc. and could pretty much order me nails to fit any brand of nailer inc. Senco etc.

For previous fencing jobs in the past we have used a Paslode IM350, hired for about £35 per week. As previously mentioned they are reasonably heavy and the nails are quite expensive (although I believe other brand nails will fit it). Hull Power Tools quoted me £400 inc. vat for one this week. There is definitely a company based in the UK on the internet (which I do not know the name of by the way!) that will sell you a new boxed Paslode IM350 for less than £300 as I know someone who bought one.

  • I use 40mm staples and a compressor.......... the stapler came from Axminster tools and was about £50..... just a cheap 25litre SIP airmate compressor..... great with feather edge boards and really  hold them on  well........ planks I put on  a few years back are still firmly attached. I think the staples work out a lot cheaper than nails and less chance of the wood splitting.  I was slightly dubious about using staples at first but you find a lot of good quality sheds/fence panels use them rather than nails.
