Mulcher Lawnmowers, advice needed

Hi,I now do a few lawns in the v large bracet, 80 % of them cannot get a ride on into he back garden. So I was thinkin of getting a mulching mower to do the lawns out off control, instead of cuttin them 3-4 times with my Honda and Hayter.I have no experience of mulching mowers except I see th council chaps use them to v overgrown sideways, and they seem to do a great job.Can anyone give me an advice please, I have been looking on eBay, is the Hayter Hayterette good model?, Does Honda do one? Should I look at a combo mulcher/collector.Any posts will of course be much appreciated.Andrew

  • How large is very large, m2?

Mulchers are no good for long overgrown grass as they rely on circulating the grass around the deck a couple of times to chop it up. This mans they block up easily and spit out lumps. You need a side/rear discharge cut for this type of ground, and either leave the grass to rot or collect it by other means if needed.

The Hayterette is a rear discharge mower as far as I know. It will probably leave an acceptable finish on these lawns.

  • My largest domestic is 280 ft long x 80 ft wide, just priced a 200ft x 90/100ft wide, a few commercials probably have just as large amounts, if I added all the areas up.

The 2nd domestic I quoted, needs sat least 3 cuts, at a high level, med/high, then med/low as a starter cut, just looking at my options to improve speed, and quality of course.
  • Roughly 1/2 acre on those. My advice would be use something like the hayterette or a 32" scag/ferris to get the height down and to maintain if a fine finish is not required. Once down in height, a mulcher walk behind might only take 1 1/2 hours to go around so, if you can be bothered, that would produce a nicer finish.

  • Thanks, I have a top of the range Honda QXE 536 and a Hayter Harrier 48 pro, which give me the Wembles stripes, but when on use on out of control lawns, I have to cut them 3-4 times through the levels. Must be a quicker way, never had/used a mulcher. May get a eBay item to explore my options.

    Thanks again.

  • i would buy a cheap 21inch mower to knock it down with a high cut and collect as much as possible and then run over it with the honda. if it is 'out of control' i wouldnt use a mulcher as you might be spreading seeds from weeds and undesirable grass types. you can pick up a well used HRH536 for a few hundred pounds, an etesia 51 with a kawka engine..as long as the drives work the engines will last forever so you could forgive a less than perfect appearance for the job intended.. a scag would be good but you might still have to collect and they are not cheap either..personally i would go for a 21" with a honda engine for rough cutting..

We do the Hayterette for a fine finish and 457mm cutting width but we also do the 36" Ferris Flail walk behind mower which may speed things up for you (if you can fit it into the garden)

    Hi Andrew,

Suggest you try the duocut range of Etesia, the machine is a fantastic mukcher for when the grass is at the right stadge of growth, by this I mean the mower is not a magician whatever you mulch has to go somewhere. So there is no point in thinking you can take 3 or 4 ins of grass down to 1/2" in one go as they will not work.
Beauty of the duocut is you have a cut and collect or cut and drop that will work in the worst of conditions, and then when the times are good you can clip in the mulch insert and then mulch, no tools required.

Local dealer P Tuckwells, or give us a shout if you are interested in knowing more

  • Hi Dan can you tell me what height the lawn was before you cut it ?

To the left of the picture is the resulting finish of a scag 32inch zero turn mower the grass on the right is a foot tall i can tell you they will cut upto 4ft tall grass that is thick and wet as long as the machine is maintained well, the machine will fit through a 3ft gate and if your looking to cut a bowling green size lawn it will take you 1/2 hour approx with a scag if you want to collect it a mower with a 5.5 hp engine and large bag will do, just stick it on its highest height setting and collect, the collection could take several hours approx 2 1/2.
