Mower deck protection

Has anyone found a product that will protect the underside of mower deck and more importantly last when bombarded with grit, sticks etc from the blades revolving at high speed?

  • Use a machine with  a decent aluminium deck, you shouldn't need any protection............ it'll outlast everything else on the machine.

    • Steel not aluminium!

      • A Waxoyl-type underbody seal would work,  Upol Raptor if you're feeling flush. I would just get into the habit of cleaning the deck after use or at least once a week. Or, as Graham has suggested, upgrade to an aluminium-decked machine.

      • steel might be tough but its much heavier and rusts so you end up with serious corrosion problems, often resulting in the scrapyard.

When I put a new deck in my stiga because the old one rotted away I used underbody sealer, it has a wee bit of give and takes a pressure washing. It has a few knocks from stones but no signs of water ingresse. Grass dies build up a bit quicker on it but soon washes off.

  • The deck is pretty much constantly shot blasted in use, so most things, like paint, will immediately disappear after a just few hours use anyway. So really during the season there isn’t a problem with rot or rust on the bare metal as it gets scoured every day.

Just clean thoroughly at the end of the season and spray or brush on a thin coat of engine oil. This will protect it whilst stood over winter and will immediately disappear the first time it is used again in the spring.

My Stiga Combi 100 deck has done over 1100 hours of hard use, is bare metal [on the underside] and is as solid as a rock.

  • I use this ACF 50 on my mower, the van and my classic car!

My mowers are Etesia Pro 46's so plastic deck, i just give them a good scrape at the end of the week, or after any use on wetter than normal grass.

I use the ACF 50 several times a year on screws, bolt heads, nuts etc that are exposed to the dirt and wet, especially relevant on the underside of a mower. The stuff is very durable, so i could probably only do it once, but i like to be thorough with the classic and this bleeds over to the mowers!

ACF-50 and Corrosion Block total Corrosion Control
