low budget leaf blower needed

We now, as you may know have our Nursery, high on a Dorset hill, surrounding by a wonderful windbreak of deciduous Trees. umm! This Autumn/Winter we are going to need a leaf blower of sorts, none of these vacs please as we have lots of shingle/flint around. Ideally petrol, four stroke so we do not have to mess around with pre-mix, that reminds me too much of my old 50cc bike!!!Any ideas welcome on something low budget, as we will only use it once or so a year and ideally hand held so that we can get around the tunnels.Ideas, supplier details welcome.Thank you in advance.SteveSuppliers

  • Sounds like a good case for hiring ?
  • Buy a second hand stihl. You'll get a great one for £150.
  • for £250, you'll get a brandnew BG86........... you might be lucky picking up a secondhand one cheap but the odds are its knackered. Wouldn't touch a "cheap" make....... when you want to use it, it won't start and when it does, the performance/vibration/weight will be bad

I concur...I would steer clear of 4-stroke and it's no big deal to mix up fuel - one 4.5 litre can will last a fair while anyway. Stihl are easily the best make but always take a look at the air speed per min/sec.

I would rather pay the right price for the right power than pay less for a machine that will leave you frustrated.
  • I am not aware of a low budget 4 stroke hand held blower and would not purchase one if there was.

However contrary to other comments, my 3 year experience is the Honda 4 stroke blower is a far better tool than any 2 stroke. It has a little less power than the latest Stihl blower but you don't have to mix fuel which is just an unnecessary job, it is quieter, exhaust fumes are far less and you don't end up smelling like an oily rag at the end of the day. I think also the fuel consumption is better than a 2 stroke but not absolutely sure about that.
  • Do people not generally already have some 2 stroke mixed up for strimmers, blowers and chainsaws anyway?
  • Makita do a 4 stroke blower £160 from Screwfix.
Got one myself, does the job. Had 1 year of use with no problems. Good thing is it is so quiet in comparison to 2 stroke tools.
  • Probably yes but not all engines use the same mix so it could involve having several well labelled mixes on hand.
  • Hi Dan

I think for most people this is probably true. I however use a Honda 4 stroke bent shaft strimmer so with the mower & blower that's me sorted for most of the time. Haven't ventured into 4 stroke hedge trimmers yet and don't think I will judging by whats on offer.

For the purpose specified by T & S Plants and assuming they do not run other petrol driven equipment which you mentioned then I thought a Honda 4 stroke blower would serve them well. Not cheep though!

  • Hi all

Thanks for all your help on this.

It appears from your responses, it's either a Sthil 85 or a four stroke Honda/Makita.

I'll do my homework on these.
