  • a nice pair of felco 7 or 8s secateurs - but you can use a hedge trimmer on laurel even though some say you shouldn't due to the size of the leaf.

i swing the blade up the hedge from below to go with the growth (if i'm making sense here, then that;s a bonus) and it gives good results.

  • Trouble is Stuart need to reduce by foot hedge trimmer won't go through that durely

If a large reduction and going through thick branches then I would use a light chainsaw such as a Stihl 181. But you need your chainsaw tickets....

Failing that then Bahco pruning saw and Bahco loppers should do the trick...

....... Or a Stihl Kombi with a pruning head / HT75 ;-) IF you can safely use horizontally from the ground

....... 'technically' no ticket required (grey area)

  • I had to take about 50CM width off a laurel recently, stems varying between pencil- and thumb-thick. It was a c. 150M run

Secateurs, nice and sharp, and a Silky for the thicker stems. Cutting by hand and chucking it straight in the trailer meant no picking up, and it was a far better finish than a machine. A Silky with a fresh blade goes through stems of 25mm or so in one or two strokes.

A pro hedge cutter should easily take a foot off laurel, though? Unless it's been cut above that height for years and built up thick stumps. Most laurel hedges grow more than that in a season, so it should be new growth.
