Kota Blue Limestone

Good evening all,

it's been a while since I have been on as I left the industry a few years back. I hope you are all keeping well. I have recently moved house and we have decided to lay 900x600 Kota blue limestone pavers. I have done the usual prep of a 100mm sub base and then a 50mm full bedding layer of sharp sand and cement at 4:1. the slabs have gone down well over around 25m2, in the course of laying them we had some delightful weather resulting in a plastic sheet being laid across to stop the rain. I have now noticed that 5-6 random pavers sound like they are loose and as you step you can hear a slight crunch noise. I have never had this issue before. This is what I have used previously on Black Limestone and there has never been an issue for me or my customers.

any suggestions as to the cause of this, I know it's remedy is to remove, break out the bedding and relay on a new mix but I'm concerned that all the laving will lift now

Hi James, I'm know expert in paving, but I do lay the odd patio.

On the paving expert wedd site it shows with limestone you should make a bridging bond between lime slabs and mortar using SBR and cement mix that you applie to the bottom of the slab. I have successfully used this method to repair old patio's. It appears to work well. The other methods I have used it to wet the bottom of the slabs on the outside course. Which causes suction.

    Hope that helps, Dave

    • Thanks Dave, this is weird in the fact that I haven't experienced this issues before with this stone. I haven't used the SBR mix before and it's never been an issue.

I did email Tony from Paving Expert and he has suggested that these stones are perhaps clearance one which have been sat in the yard for a while. If they are they quite often get dusty and this causes issues
