Key "Service" Tools for Landscaping Equipment

I suspect most members on LJN are very practical and look to service/troubleshoot faults in/on their equipment, leaving only the warranty , difficult or long winded jobs to service agents.

Tool kits get built up over the years from the basic spanners, sockets and screwdrivers to more specialised service tools. Along the way, we find great or valued service tools that help tremendously with our equipment.

So, what "service" tool do you have in your toolbox / vehicle / garage / yard that you would recommend to others ?

Starting this off; one of my much 'loved' tools is a simple digital tacho - it gets used when servicing anything with an engine and/or that rotates :-) - from helping to diagnose lawnmower engine speeds, Stihl gear, setting tickovers etc. Simple basic ones cost under £10, like this.....

Separately, we have  these on our main mowers for helping to log time, service intervals and monitoring engines speeds during tall grass cuts etc

Come on, show us yours ;-).

Had a set of these in the tool box for a few years now, have proved invaluable come winter servicing days in the unit

Hammer. Only joking - angle grinder.

  • I like that digital tacho Gary....... never realised they existed and were so cheap.... have sent off for one already. I'm sure my chainsaw is revving too high and I'll be able to check that out now.

Impact driver for rounded screws and stuck bolts has got me out of a fix more than once.

If the worst happens and a bolt head snaps off or a stud needs removing - stud extractor.

Mini wire brush for cleaning spark plugs, slips neatly in the onsite spares box. It's supposed to be for shoes but works a treat.

  • Tin snips/wire cutters for freeing strimmers from hidden garden twine etc,Holts Easy Start for those Monday morning hard to start machines

  • Motorbike lift, no more bending down or lifting mowers onto a bench on your own.

  • Makita cordless grinder, great in the workshop and keep it in the van incase I hit a stone mowing or need a quick hoe or spade sharpen. And of course wd40
  • Long screw driver for when changing chainsaw blades

    Spray cleaner of some sort

    Wd40

Old rag just to name a few
  • Tent pegs! OK,not so much for servicing, but for general jobs / emergency fixes throughout the working day.

  • My favourite tool out of all my tool box has to be my ratchet speed spanners great for quick repairs and keep machinery downtime to a minimal =]

Other than that i have a full mechanics tool case carry in my van.
