Easy to start as is seen every year. Easy to actually make money long term no.
It's lots and lots of hard work a bit of luck and then more hard work added to spending a lot of hard earned money everyday just for the pleasure of calling yourself a business owner!
Sometimes I wonder if it's worth it!!
Would not change it now though I don't think......
  • Yup piece of cake!  Only last Friday did we see a new set-up(we think!) doing their stuff opposite one of our regulars.  The job was in the front garden, trimming and topping 3 free standing 25ft Lleylandii and 'pruning' a flowering cherry.  Easy-peasy, what could possibly go wrong? The Cherry was soon done - not a lot left now, just a few stumps atop of the trunk, but at least you could see where they had been!

The three Lleylandii were a little more troublesome, as the first trim only reached 10 ft up, but not to worry, out came a pair of 4' 6"' steps - they made all the difference, well by 4' 6" anyway!  After a bit of head scratching - the masterstroke! The beaten up van was maneuvered close to the first tree and up hopped one of the operatives - good, but not quite good enough - still a few feet short of the top!  Then, the master, master stroke. With the steps now on top of the van and No1 operative teetering on the top of the steps, the first tree was given a completed haircut!

30mins later the road and public footpath was full of conifer cuttings - never mind, they had a cunning plan! Out came a ropy mower and they proceeded to 'mulch' in the road with bits flying everywhere and the odd car edging past! When it was all over, off they went with half the cuttings still on the roof of the van, but they soon disappeared as they gathered speed so all was well and a job well done!

Now that's amusing, it's amazing the stuff new start ups get up too, I recently drove past a firm with 3 blokes stood on the floor looking up at one bloke in a tree, nothing strange there, until you look a little closer, no harness, or safety gear of any sort and an extension lead running from the power socket up to an electric chainsaw, insane, absolutely bloody insane...
      • Wow, insane! I hope they have some employers' liability in place! :)

    • amazing you should of video it for facebook haha

      • I wish I had Mitchel, but I value my good looks!

  • easy to set up yes. for a few weeks, until you need this bit of kit and that bit of kit. oh then you need somewhere to store it and so the snowball keeps rolling. taken me 12 years to get my company where i really want it and making a profit. a lot of hard work on my own to begin with and then paying everybody elses wages but my own after that, along with a few grey hairs.such a long learning curve
