never really totally shut off. definite two week shut down at Christmas but still the occasional phone call and email. never really ends when its your business, but im getting better at shutting off!
It's not an onerous task but I'll be on duty over Christmas just to make sure things are running smoothly.

Shut down from just before Xmas until the New Year. When I get in an evening I generally try to get any paperwork, quotes etc. that need doing done straight away, while I'm still in a work frame of mind. That way once I stop I'm done with work for the evening and can relax.
I do the opposite. I spend time with the kids and then crawl into the office to do the stuff after they are in bed
Off to Wales next week!
Then Jamaica in January, yes i deserve it :)
I've been at this 6 yrs now and at first i finished for winter but i can't now its non stop.
This year's unusual in that it's still, effectively, autumn here. I'm cutting lawns fortnightly and still loads of leaves on the trees. Our own oak hasn't dropped a leaf yet!
I'd noramlly be all but closed from Christmas until the first regular work in spring, but can't see it this year. That's why I can't understand the people who shut down over winter, regardless of the weather, and do some other job.
Had a day off today: nice lunch, 2 hour drive home because of an accident and then had to sharpen the hedgecutter for a job tomorrow. I know how to unwind.....20:15 and at least I now have a beer in my hand whilst I do a report for a landlord!
I realise I'm in the minority here but I cant wait for the winter break. I slog it out all Spring SummerAutumn and Winter is my time. I do have lots of other things I want to do and have saved hard in the Summer to allow me to do this. For me time off is just as Important as working. Doing the odd email and pottering about sharpening tools is not for me. Time off is escaping work and that's what it is. Don't get me wrong I'm a incredibly passionate about my work and business but for me I love the winter break to let me enjoy the other things life gives. Time, holiday, exploring, friends , family etc. Sure money gets a bit low but it soon starts all over again when Spring arrives. The work / life balance is incredibly important and sometimes the time off needs more scheduling and keeping to than the working.
I'm totally with you, Red Robin!
Work 7 days when the weather's nice , then take the winter off and stay warm and dry.
I've got a load of decorating to do, and have a 9-months-off, three-months-on relationship with hobbies ( I have to harden the fingers up before the guitar playing is enjoyable again!). A few weekends away, no pressure to get up in the morning, it's great.
I will keep going if it's needed, but that's really only when the last leaves are cleared. I do sewrvice everything, do the accounts, plan price changes etc. ready for the spring, and visit all the properties a few times to make sure nothing's happened (particularly after a storm or something), but certainly no more than a day a week.
With a new baby I am, changing the balance to part time and home early every day; ramping up can wait 12 years.
