Not free, i think it costs around £24 odd per month, but it's so simple to use and you can access it from anywhere - http://getjobber.com/
I think getjobber is specific to our needs however I would like to try a three month version prior to taking the plunge.
Because my trial of kashflow has expired I downloaded filemaker 13 which has ready to go templates including templates for invoicing so we are now migrating to this for an interim solution.

I would ensure you know the long term options/implications of taking any freeware solutions for business.
Can I customise ? (logos/formats/A4 vs Legal paper sizes) ?
Are there product/feature limitations in the freeware versions ?
Is there an upgrade route ?
If I grow will it be fit for purpose (ie UK regs) ?
Am I locked in or can I get my data out at a later date ?
Is my data safe ?
There are a number of 'free' US solutions I can point you to, but none fit the UK market 100%
Some of these concerns will also apply to purchased/monthly rental solutions.
Having experience in this arena, at the end of the day your chosen solution should always aim to fit your business needs first, accepting we all have "limited" pockets.
It's the old features vs benfits vs costs debate :-)
My accountant uses quick books and he said it would be good if I chose that ???
For a Contractor based business, QB can be a good choice and has an upgrade path.
However just because your Accountant uses it, that should not be the overall deciding factor (for instance our Act uses Sage, yet we use QB Pro).
If you want an 'anywhere, anytime' type of access then you need to look at SaAS / Cloud / Online based solutions that can be accessed via PC, Tablet, Smart phone. Here the main players are QB Online, Xero, AccountingWeb, KashFlow and so.....
If you want a desktop solution, again packages like QB, Sage etc are there.
For instance;
QB have a line of Desktop products that starts at QB Simple Start and go through to QB Premier, or ;
QB Online which starts with SimpleStart...to... Essentials...to...Plus
The above are all Accounting / financial solutions (ie they will allow you to prepare Estimates/Quotes/Invoices, run your TP&L etc and can produce many reports for you/your book keeper and/or accountant).
Hybrid systems, like GetJobber, Lawnaid etc go an extra step and help run the operational (ie scheduling) side of the business but can be complex and/or you may have to change the way you run your business to fit.
Strangely, some of these hybrid systems can also be the front end to products like QB...trying to give the best of both worlds.
I ve been using Quick books after many trials and demos and much discussion and advice of fellow members think Gary RK got most of the myther lol
I personally find it suit s all my needs and does everything i require and was able to personize the invoices etc to how i d like
