Identify, Plan, Execute.

Business Stage Identification
All business go through stages, and you may recognise some from the list below.
These are purely examples, because you may want to call your stage something completely different depending on what you wish to concentrate on.
Seed, Start up, Growth, Expansion, Mature, Exit.
You could have a stage called consolidation, max advertising, rapid growth, or whatever.
The point is that you should recognise whatever stage you are in and make a detailed plan, and while you are in that stage, start to identify what your next stage is, then plan that stage and execute it when you have recognised that the prior stage has reached its conclusion.

  • Actually, as with most of what you post Adrian, this makes sense. However, I think that most of us who have been around a fair time, apply or have applied a lot of your theories/strategies subconsciously throughout – only not realized it!
Keep them coming – I am at stage 5 at the moment planning stage 6 by the way!

I believe business advice comes in two flavours - "Textbook 101" & "Real Life".

You need a mix of both, but the 'quantities' of that mix will be unique to each of us.

If you get that right, you will hopefully be running a sucessful, profitable long term business.

Wonder how many actually achieve that....

    Me? I'm still trying :-)

  • Expansion ? hmmmm ?!! or Exit quick :)

  • I would take a guess that not many people in this type of business have business plans, and that is probably because they either don't bother or don't know how to do it.

I have worked in several types of industry over many years (Caravan sales and Hire, Frozen Food manufacture, Diesel Engine manufacture, Exports, and Property Development)and I find that although Horticulture is one of the largest types of employment in the country, it could do with modernizing its ideas a bit and getting more professional about the way it operates.

You're right - it would be a guess

I think 'business textbook 101' approach will suit a certain segment of visitors

Do you have T&PL responsibility for your business ?
