Ideas on Garden Waste?

I have a large garden and I try to compost most waste but with the larger bits like rose clippings and hedge trimmings we used to take to the local dumb but we don’t have the old car we used to use! So we burn it, any ideas?

  • I went to a conference not long ago where the discussion of bonfires dominated proceedings. Many people think that it is dreadful in this day and age to be burning still. However the 'top' greens at the event surprised everyone by saying that in reality a proper bonfire is not that harmful as composting the waste is equal in CO2 emissions if not more considering the journey to the tip and there is real evidence that gardens are not what they used to be due to the lack of potash, particularly in some areas.

    Therefore burn without guilt.
  • Interesting to hear that about bonfires my partner is very keen on having a fire and is never worried about it whereas I look on feeling guilty about the environment! Never thought about the carbon used for actually making the chippers! Food for thought..and I wont feel so guilty now about seeing those fires..I'll tell Dean he will be happy!

Also chipper shredders must give off a fair amount of co2 and pollutants plus noise, plus producing the things who knows whats best? maybe a goat!

Goats produce methane, you just can't win
  • Shaun, if its just for your own garden use, then the electric Bosch AXT 2200 HP may well be adequate, about £230. Have a look at www.fredshed.co.uk
  • I would love to suggest throw it next door but I don't think that would go down well. I am always amazed that my elderly neighbour in Sussex waits all week until I come on a weekend to set light to all her rubbish which then blows straight into my windows. I have always been considerate when burning a bonfire and I stay to make sure it all burns properly.Wish I could burn it somewhere near her house!
Like the idea of a goat too but I think they wouldn't just eat all the rubbish-they would knowing my luck eat most of my garden and end up in the house.
