Hayter 'Readystart' problems

Hi all, just wondering if anyone else has had starting problems with the Hayter 'Readystart' mowers - I've just bought a Harrier 41 to replace a previous Hayter with the usual engine prime 'button' which worked fine. New mower starts first time no hassle, after mowing and moving on to the next job - it is an absolute pig to start - it can take me 10 minutes of trying it/leaving it for a bit/trying again etc before it gets going. I can't smell petrol so don't think its an engine flooding problem - other half took spark plug out to check gap etc, that was all fine. Old mower is having autodrive mechanism replaced - as soon as I get it back - this new one is going in to be looked at - ahhhhh!! :(

  • Hi Pro Gard - it doesn't have a fuel tap and I wouldn't have the foggiest idea about fitting one :) !!!

Hi Colin - its only a week old, fuel cap is fine as far as I know - its a Briggs and Stratton Quantum engine not sure which series without going out to look at it - its in my garage at the mo. I went to collect my other Hayter mower from repairers today - a Spirit 41 and took the new one back to the shop with me and basically did a swap. They are going to look at it, one of the shop staff did comment that it sounded like it was 'missing'. Its going to be sorted under the warranty and at least I have a working mower for the rest of the week!

Thanks for your replies guys. x
  • Hi again everyone, a quick update on my Harrier 41 Readystart problems. I took it back and surprise surprise the repairers could find nothing wrong with it they had it running, stopped it, restarted with no problem - so I got it back. In the shop again buying some bits and pieces about a week later and one of the assistants asked me how I was getting on with the Harrier - I told him it was still not starting properly. I was told that there was a problem with jets being too big and a few things need adjusting/replacing - the shop had been talking to Briggs technical dept. Its back in at the moment having the adjustments/repair done. Will post details of what was done when I get it back.
  • Hi again everyone, finally got my Harrier back today and it seems to be fixed - its started 4 times first time today, so hopefully thats the end of the saga. Along with a thermostat on the readystart system, its also had a new carburetor. I think I bought a 'Friday afternoon' machine!!
  • A final (hopefully) update on my Hayter mower. After getting it back with a new carburetor fitted and having it work fine for ONE day, it went back to repairers two days later with exactly the same problem. Repairers haven't got foggiest what is wrong with it so are sending it back to Hayter. Hayter agreed to give me a new mower - same as before. Went to collect it last Friday (5th Nov), Manager started the mower outside the shop and i've never heard anything so rough - struggled to get going, revs dropping really low, then high, then back to low etc. I refused to accept the machine, manager agreed it didn't sound right and this was a brand new mower. Finally I got a credit note for full value to use whenever I feel like it on whatever I want to buy. Still have my Hayter Spirit which thankfully has been fine.
  • why not get your cash back/card refund ?

mine is 1998 used it for 3 yrs without servicing - serviced then was stolen - got it back and used it end of summer - never ever a starting problem . hayter 48-autocut/roller :)

  • I was happy with a credit note, I asked for one as its a good local shop for me and I will be in there next year. May put it towards buying a professional mower rather than a heavy duty domestic one. Only issue for me is that the gardens I do are (mostly) small suburban gardens and a smaller mower is easier to get around. Will think about it over the winter and maybe read some discussions on LJN.
  • if its credit note , maybe worth getting a good deal before extra 2.5% vat /and price increases next year -

a 19"mower will get through any gate/steps ,car gaps always i have found........ buy a tested model - as all new things (plastic) are usually crap.

good luck : los of discussion on this ! if you type hayter' in top right search box.
