Gardening with Adders!

Anyone have this slithery problem? Adders are known to be living in the herbaceous borders both sides of the walled garden in a very large country house garden, though in the year I've been working there, I've not yet come across one. I am not looking forward to it! Yes, I know "they're more scared of me than I am of them", and actually I'm getting impatient to spot one just so I can stop jumping everytime a darn leaf rustles!!,I'm really more concerned about harming them. The client hates them and would be just as happy to see them shot at dawn! I researched the possibility of getting them re-located (this was earlier in the year, as of course now they're hibernating), but it's such a large garden right at the foot of the south downs so it's perfect territory and who's to say they won't just come back. The herbaceous border (90ft) in question is being re-designed next Spring as a "hot" border, so there'll be a fair amount of disruption while that happens. When just maintaing the existing border, I gently crash about a bit with the hoe and look under the shrubs for any sign of the little critters, but I'm worried about standing on one!I wonder if anyone has this problem, or indeed any other wildlife challenges within their gardens. Also, anyone got any odd phobias which really they shouldn't have when gardening (eg I get the willies when I see a slug :))

  • This summer I got the shock of my life when a 2metre whip snake came close to me, very common here and harmless but it actually reared up to me. Had experience of Adders also - see the blog biting beasties and beginning to think snakes have a thing for me, (better change my after shave) but starting to be more cautious as to where I put my hands.
