Gardening 'makes children happy"

Saw this on the BBC news website this morning - Now didn't we knew this ages ago.http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/10427338.stmI know a few members here have involvement with school gardens already and wouldn't it be great if more of us got involved?

  • It's one of the most rewarding things about my job. I love giving talks at schools, no child can ever get board when you bring the Venus fly trap out!!
  • My daughter teaches a nursery class, they grow some vegetables and sunflowers, the children really enjoy it, one little girl in particular manages all the watering.
  • My daughters love gardening and offspring No.2, who is only 7, shows a real sensativity for it. Offspring No.1 mainly grows salad for her guinea pigs.

Every year No.2's school gets them to plant a seed, either tomato or sunflower. Offspring No.2 is the only one in her class who actually gets it to grow.

Mind you, it would be a bit embarrasing for me if she didn't!

My son loves gardening although that to him means digging tunnels and playing in sand...He has sown veg seeds and the school is quite good at getting the kids growing. It's tricky with the school year - you have to choose things that are quick and that will crop in time for the kids to see the results of their labour. I've written an article about kids' gardening activities, things for indoors and outdoors and it has done quite well for interest. Designing gardens in shoe boxes was a good activity that the school was involved in - my little boy didn't want to do it though...
  • Just thinking out aloud - there should be no reason why LJN could not be the first stop for schools looking to get a "gardening club" off the ground if sufficient members were able to offer a few hours of their time free of charge to get the basics sorted and the ball rolling?
  • We have a wealth of gardening expertise on here, (most of which I do not share), would it be possible for some of the members to produce a gardening resource programme downloadable for schools?
The report could contain an acknowledgement to the authors with a link to their websites.

I would support this if we have one or two volunteers.

  • I would be happy to volunteer
  • I don't want to put a dampener on things, but as someone who runs a school gardening club, there are already fantastic resources out there, - we should link to them rather than reinventing the wheel, - got to go out now, but will post links later.
