Frustrations with clients.

I have sorry had a customer who contracted me to build him a veg area at the top of his garden last year. The work and materials cost a small fortune at their request; oak timbers for 8 raised beds, acres of membrane, 11 tonnes of gravel, preparation, plants, fencing etc etc. Even if I say it myself a cracking job. He paid (late but paid) and I heard no more, the other day I was working next door and being a curious sort I peered over the fence and was horrified to see that the whole thing is badly overgrown, full of couch grass, bramble and nettles. I suspect it hasn't been touched since the day we finished. At the end of the day it's their money to spend as they wish but it's incredibly frustrating to see our hard work ruined.I would post pictures but don't think it appropriate.Do you find yourself getting dishearten by such complacency?

  • I would get in touch with the clients and offer ongoing maintenance. Is frustrating I know but they clearly still need your expertise.
  • There might be a good reason for it? Health problems, relationship break-up, problems with an elderly relative: loads of possibilities as well as simple neglect.

  • This is exactly how we got into and built up our garden maintenance business! I began offering a maintenance programme after all completed landscape projects, which has seen that side grow and grow. We are now almost completely maintenance and I hand hard landscaping enquiries to 2 or 3 trusted local contractors.

  • Yep, sounds like he needs your services for maintenance!

  • It's really none of your business how they look after their garden if the work you did was a one-off. I'd be far too busy moving on and working on the next job making a living to support my family to think about it!

  • I do sometimes, but I tend to let it wash over me now. I do like going back to gardens that have been looked after and established by clients, when they ask us to quote for extra work etc

  • often - most clients do didly squat in there gardens about 20% 50 odd % of them...

thats why they need us :)

Whilst not being any of your business lol, how your work ages over time is your business, after all if someone asks them who did your landscaping for you? Your name will pop up and regardless of whether or not it was down to the client that it now looks a mess your company will be looked at the supplier of being the "now mess", this is one reason why I don't do landscaping for non regular clients now, that way I can ensure all is maintained to a high standard. Is a shame when you see your work go to ruin....:(

    Important point you've made there.
  • important point maybe, but what can you do about it, in the same way a builder or a painter and decorator may do a fantastic job, if its not looked after then there snot a lot you can do. DO I turn down a 3 week project from a new client because he may not look after the completed work?

That's a non question if you are a hard/soft landscaping company because of cours you take it. If you do both landscaping and maintenance then maybe you try and sell the maintenance with the landscaping.
You cannot be held responsible for people letting your projects go to ruin through lack of care. All you can do is leave a high standard of work behind and be happy with that in my opinion cheers Richard
