Fence trouble

I have a client that has a garden on a slope, and at the top of the slope is the rear fence. I've been asked to take up turf and make some borders. Upon taking up the turf, I've seen there is a big drop into the garden behind. About half a foot drop. I've so far only taken the turf up but I'm a bit concerned that a strong downpour of rain will erode the soil into the garden behind.

I'm looking for a solution for this - so far I've thought of perhaps a second gravel board, which the side fence does have, just not the rear fence. But it seems like overkill as the gap is maybe 2 inches, and the border is along the length of 5 fence panels, so it would add significant labor cost to dig a trench all the way along etc.

I might be missing something though, as I never work on fences, sol any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • I would put your concerns to the customer, explain about the possible erosion etc. I would then explain that you would more confident of doing a better job by installing extra gravel boarding.
If they then say they don't want the extra expense then at least you have covered yourself. Although obviously best to put it in writing in the quote etc.
  • simple solution is to place a concrete gravel board against the face of the fence. wont take long to do if its only 6 inches deep
