Fake Grass (Astro turf and the like)

I see at long last that there is a swelling of movement against fake grass being laid in private gardens.

Laying a sheet of green plastic grass over the ground kills off all insect life and makes the ground sterile, makes the area under the fake grass unhygienic, contributes to flooding, is not biodegradable, and ends up in the tip after a few years.

A petition has been sent to the government calling for plastic grass to be banned, stating that " The sale of artificial grass should be banned in the UK for environmental reasons”.

  • In 2015 I sold one of my old Stiga Parks mowers to a guy who specialised in astro turf sports pitch maintenance. He was going to fit brushes where the blades were because fake turf needs to be brushed to regularly lift the pile. He was telling me that it also has to sprayed with disinfectant on a regular basis because anything that lands on the pitch germ wise, like when football players are spitting and clearing their noses etc., just sits there and isn’t broken down like with real grass. Then there are the repairs on top of that.

By the time he had done explaining, it was clear that fake turf requires as much input maintenance wise as real grass. The problem is that ordinary domestic people think that you can just put it down and that’s it. It isn’t quite that simple.

I've laid astro turf a few times, I hate it!i Its so wrong and will not be doing again. And will happy tell the customers the above reasons. Like Vic says it's not less maintenance it's more. One lawn, I used to cut the grass in 20mins and clip the edges. Now its fake it takes me 2hrs a month to brush it and blow it and that's with machines. Nasty sruff!

    • awful stuff yes the human race will look back and laugh that it was ever a thing, and feel ashamed

  • I read in the paper yesterday that the government may require people to get planning permission to lay plastic fake grass in the near future.

As plastic grass is used over the years it brakes down into micro plastic which contaminate the soil, just like plastic bags in the sea.
