Fairy ring treatment?

My father in law has within the last year or two become quite keen on his lawn. It had been very dry and neglected and he now waters like crazy and has green thumb on the case.

It has been aerated scarified and fed with their usually recipes.

It has developed absolutely stereotype fairy rings, really clear circles of dead turf with intensely green centres. From looking online it seems they are type 1 rings.

Greenthumb, who's local franchise is notorious for screaming leatherjackets at the sight of any brown patch have indeed said its leather jackets and are recommending treating it as such.

I assume this is because they can't effectively treat the fairy rings easily. Is this correct?

So in summary any recommended treatments? i'm not going to go out and buy and expensive specialist chemicals but don't want him to waste money on greenthumb who are clearly just wanting to charge for something.

I vaguely remember old armillatox bottlse said it treated fairy rings although obviously the field of use is not legit now.

Funny i was speaking to a guy that used to work for GT last week and he was saying they are encouraged to spray for leather jackets for pretty much anything.

Aerate the area and apply a wetting agent.

  • Jays fluid used to work but do not know if the new stuff works as well as i have not tried it

  • I agree aeration and apply a wetting agent is the only way to break up the ring,Fertiliser high in Nitrogen will mask a type 2, do not buy expensive chemicals as they rarely work and only contain a wetting agent anyway. jeyes fluid will burn the grass leaf and leave a brown patch. hope this helps

  • What type of aeration would you use and any recommendation on a wetting agent ?

  • Full solid Tine Aearation as deep as possible, probably with a vertidrain for larger areas, i wouldnt advise holow tines as this may spread the fungus across your lawn ready to start another ring, ive used the wetting agent from scotts everis which has seen some improvement.
