Do you really need a 4x4?

I have been looking at getting a Mitsubishi L200 to replace my van. I have never owned a 4x4 but have driven plenty, but as Landscaping is my trade and its all residential customers do i really need one? Answer is probably no, winter is winter, i dont work if its a foot in snow nut i do worry about getting out with the family , its thats just in case senario.
Thoughts please....

  • Richard - for me yes, but that's because of crew space in the cab - namely family for 75% of the time used and work squad for the rest (currently).

Those percentages have changed (towards meeting business targets rather than the family run-around) and I expect them to change further in that direction in 2014.

What can I say about my 4X4 otherwise, for business purposes? Well, the tow bar and front winch have always been useful, when it's snowed it's been great too....and for the time being I'm perfectly content having a covered (Truckman) 4x4 for the work undertaken at this business.

Oh, and with kids' seats out of the back I've got a whole load of tool space or the ability to bring many hands to one job all in one vehicle.

    Cheers, Eugene

Ive had numerous 4x4's over the years and ran them alongside my vans. Personally, I wouldnt be without one these days. Love them and looking at getting a newer one in early new year time. The expense of owning and running one is heavily offset by their usefulness.
  • I run a Ssangyong Rexton commercial (no back seats) loads of room, comfortable to drive, tows 3.5 tonnes, I have a roof rack for ladders etc, Go anywhere anytime, but I live at 950ft in Wales about 3/4 of a mile from a salted/gritted road.

  • Fair play you deffo need one!

  • Unless it's for driving on snowy roads or regular use through fields then no, I can see no advantage over a van. How many occasions would the van have not coped? Ok, doubling it up as a family vehicle has its use, but (ironically) I have a freelander for that! It wouldn't be any use for work as most of the space in my van is needed to run my business
  • i do , i nearly got stuck in a field towing trailer last week, sometimes struggle to get up entrance to gate.

i also can tow a capable 3plus tonne 16ft trailer.

its my personal car also, can be 7 seater if required (not often) on holiday to scotland with family (not my kids ,i have none)

its also good on motorway. shogun 03 3.2 auto lwb.... l200 is more truck and are good inc towing boats on sand and throwink kit in back. not so good for the meal out etc.

    think wisely..

  • I have a Nissan 4x4 LWB (with towbar) and wouldn't be without it.
On that rare occassion that you need extra traction you know you can can slip that extra gear lever into position, and get out of trouble, or they are excellant for towing trailers and caravans. The big plus is that they sit higher than most other cars, so you can see over and above all the traffic in front of you, and you have all that room inside (7 seats if required).

  • i got stuck ! just too wet on the grass .... :( 16ft trailer mind full of branches.

  • Wet grass....Been there done that, I slid down sideways. Good tyres and a winch are also useful. 3314693030?profile=RESIZE_1024x1024
