Cutting high hedges

Hi Guys

A customer asked me if I would cut his hedge. Most of it is no problem and can be got with a long reach.

There is one particular stretch that too high for me to get, i own a small platform that is roughly 1 m high, but wouldn't be enough.

The hegde in question is probably 1m or so higher than the image below

Picked the image up from google images

The stretch of hedge isn't that big maybe 20m, but i would like to do it safely without costing a fortune, any ideas?

  • Hi,

What about the 1 metre extension shaft Stihl make, along with your platform.

  • Hi Robbie,

ive got a big tripod ladder you can borrow if you want? Its 4.8m high if you stand at the top.

Chris that would be awesome mate, i will give you a ring later :)

  • I picked up a nearly-new Henchman Midi over the winter, £200 on ebay. I'd been looking for ages as thery do fetch good money usually. It's an absolute dream, so much safer than a ladder, or trying to stretch a bit too far.

A couple of hundred on a proper platform is cheaper than a couple of days off work with a small fall, let alone a broken arm or leg, or something!

  • How sturdy are the henchman platforms ?

  • A platform is leagues ahead in comfort and safety over any ladder. I've got the one below, came with the extenders and wheels as well, over £600-worth, for £200.

More awkward to transport, and not worth it on smaller jobs, but for uneven ground it's essential IMO.

  • I use a Hailo Ladder which allows me to reach pretty much all the hedges I look after including those with steps alongside thanks to the adjustable curved foot. I also transplant the adjustable hedge cutter head from my hedge cutter on to the end of my pole saw which then gives me an adjustable, 4m long hedge cutter.... :-)

  • i desperately need a good ladder, thinking about a henchman midi, do henchman still offer a discount for LJN users?
i fell of my old ladder about a month ago, pulled my ligaments, was of work for 2 weeks :(
may as well just buy a decent ladder as I'll save more money (by not falling hopefully
    ) and be safer...

  • I think there was a discount at Henchman, but it's worth asking them anyway, as often a convincing "I want my trade discount" will work with any supplier in a recession!

Keep an eye on ebay; Henchman sell some new stock at a low price, they have the midi on at £395 at the moment and it looks like it has the extension pack included (I would check though).

If you can collect then it's worth a punt at a used one. Mine was about £400 cheaper than retail, and an easy Sunday drive of about an hour each way. Domestic buyers will only have used it a couple of times a year, and usually keep them under cover. You should find a decent one if you can travel a reasonable way, and wait until the right deal comes up.

  • Thanks paul.
