Conifer hedge trimming

Hi guys.Interested to hear what you guys think about the best time to trim conifers. I notice Paul Power puts in his book that you can trim conifer hedges in November but surely this is too late in the year? The RHS recommends not cutting after August due to a link between autumn pruning and die-back.I was thinking April to August is the optimum time, at least for up here in Scotland.Any thoughts?

From May to begining of November is what I go by but I try to get everything cut June- September.

We are fairly mild comparitivly here so an early November cut whilst not ideal can be done ok.
  • Yeah fair one.

I've noticed that someone has been cutting privet hedges since the start of February locally in Glasgow too.

as a general rule if tight trimming below 10-12 degrees will usually result in a leylandii browning off at some point in the following few months. it has recently been blamed on red spider mite in the press but it is mainly down to poor timing and trimming too tightly in too cold a condition, same as always uneducated people reporting inaccurate information
