Clay Drainage troubles

Hi all, I have been working on a site where there is heavey clay, I have just dug 6ft down with a digger to see if there was any sand, gravelbeds under it but to no avail ( my region is mostly sandy loam with lots of gravel beds)I have renewed a soak away (which has just filled up with water) and pipe work that runs diagonally across the garden, I am now building an overflow chamber so water can be pumped out. The property is surrounded by houses and to the rear a play ground so no east solution. The customer has asked me to scrape of 4" of clay and replace with a good quality topsoil will this stop the water logging or will the top soil on top of the clap become a gooey mush! Has anyone done this before and what results have you had? cheers guys. sorry for the long winded explanation!!!!

  • My region has a clay belt in areas too, some places grey clay in certain areas.

what is the sq of the area please and is the area you have the clay issues in the front or back garden?

They say the customer is always right, on this occasion this is far from the truth, as water can't filter through clay easily, your 100mm of top soil will end up a slurry pit.
  • Hi kerry its a back garden and is probably 12m long x 7m wide (ish)

dont really know what to do with all this water!
  • hi there, had a few of these in the past few yrs mostly on new builds. As long as you put in perforated land drainage - not as deep as normal, rotovate in sand through the soil - when its not wet, the water should be able to get through. Add new topsoil once you've done that, in extremely bad cases I've added gravel tracks as well which were only 6" under the soil. Just make sure the water had somewhere to go, no low points etc and it should be ok.
  • Hi Colin

No doubt others will advise differently on this matter,

Based on the image, trench your cut, and the info you've sent, I've drafted a quick diagram of how I would undertake this project to remove the water, please note that all land drains and trenches are to be wrapped in membrane to suppress the silt clogging both pipe and trenches.

with a grading bucket on the excavator I'd cut the clay to form a slight v to ensure the water flows over the clay sub grade and falls to the lowest point (the diagonal trench) as long as the pipework falls in accordance with the arrows your water will be moved by gravity to the down pipe where the clean surface water can continue to the water treatment works.

Ensure your invert level in any trench is smooth and falling correctly as any bumps in the trench will hinder the flow of water

The software is Sketchup.......five years using it now.........I still have my board, pencils, scale rule etc, very seldom do I use them nowadays

The image above took 15 minutes tops......try that on a drawing board...... can't ever see my self reverting back to hand drawings but you never know..
  • Wow Kerry that is a spot on plan!! I have more or less done the ground works for this and they use most of the plan apart from the rear trench as they have a pond going in there. The front drainage channel is behind a sleeper edge which then steps down around 4"
I have ensured a gravel trap all the way round the paving takes any water away back to the soak away, then the soak away has an overflow pipe leading to a pump chamber.
I will post some pics after the whole lot is finished, still looks a mess!
