Cheap van that tows

I've managed to get my insurance company to mirror my no claims bonus across a commercial and private policy. So I've bought a cheap car and now want a cheap van something that can tow my twin axle indespension builders trailer though which is 600kg obviously lightest van possible £500-£1800 only needs to last me half a season. My 4x4 is tired needs repairs and I can't be without a work vehicle long.

  • I'd look at transits too. You will probably get something about the 2000-1 mark. Look for a t280.
  • I would say be very careful here - there ARE good cheap vans out there in the bracket you are looking at BUT I would be wanting to see a decent amount of MOT on them...

I have years ago. run older, cheaper vans in the price bracket you are looking at, some were good, some were nothing but trouble and ended up costing me money not making it...

Do you have a towing licence or are you working on the exemption as this will make a big difference as to the sort of thing I would advise, you mention the trailer is 600KG - is this the empty weight?? If so you may be struggling to get certain vans under the 3.5t (without a b+E licence) train weight law, especially as the loaded trailer shouldn't weigh more than 75% of the weight of the towing vehicle.

A little more info would help.

  • Only problem here is the T280 cannot LEGALLY tow more than 750KG (max train weight of 3.5 tons) from my recollection - if the trailer is 600KG empty, then that's eaten a good amount of the 'usable weight' especially if Mitchell is working with out a trailer licence....

My T280 will tow a braked trailer of 1.5 tonnes - quite impressive for a front wheel drive vehicle, my Sprinter 313 2 tonnes and my Isuzu Dmax 3.5

I don't think they exist in the size you want. a 4x4 would be the way to go (again)

A post 2007 dispatch will tow 2 tonnes but they're quite expensive, but if you go to the older model they only tow 900kg. Vauxhall Combo tows 1 tonne and a transit connect tows 800kg IIRC.

  • So is it impossible to a swb? Any other suggestion
  • PRO

Sorry impossible? It's not impossible I don't remember a smallish van that's old enough to be cheap that has a decent towing weight.

A SWB transit is still a heavy vehicle, although would probably give you more than the ones I listed, not sure what it weighs unladen.

Another question would be what's the payload of the trailer?

  • PRO
No it's not impossible look for a t300/330 transit is an idea. Possibly ex rac/aa?
  • James second one wouldn't pull a mini lol

First is good though mate I've been told fourtrak is just not gonna cut it anymore I'll keep it do it up use it for big loads but van will give me better advertising and less need for trailer .
