Canadian State to ban pesticides

Another Canadian state is forging ahead to ban pesticides, in particular lawn care products only.

Interesting article, with a very interesting comment section at end by Canadian public.

Fully support the stance there are more pressing issues around IF a government has the power, time & money to spend on banning pesticides with still questionable research applied by green pressure groups.

Yet no one addresses fully, one of the major killers in modern society ....smoking... what's all that about ?

Are pressure groups etc picking off easy targets, with politicians looking to appease them for an easy life and re-election ?

I'll set out my table before I get comments from various quarters...I support use of legal pesticides, applied by professionals to address issues. I don't support over application, indiscriminate use, illegal use, uneducated use or use for the sake of it. It has to be justified under a method of work.

Let's get our priorities right..or it will be the UK next and a lot of our industry (Hort & Agri) will go under with resultant problems.

  • If you read the link in the article it refers to herbicide used for cosmetic reasons in domestic lawns. Since I am of the weeds-in-a-lawn-makes-a-meadow end of the spectrum I think this is a good thing.  Save the pesticides for food crops, sprts turf or harmful weeds when it really matters because a blanket ban would be very foolish.

  • I think a blanket ban is rather foolish - However I Pray for the day that The Public cannot buy any weedkillers, Pesticides or fertilizers over the counter at a retail outlet, and it is left to us LICENCED, TRAINED professionals to use these chemicals, then we may have a huge reduction in usage, as they will only be used as and when needed, and where needed, not on an indiscriminate basis by people who have no understanding of the chemicals they are applying to their lawn, whatsoever!

Absolutely, which is why I stated the initial ban is for lawn care products, but if you follow the trend in the US & Canada, there scope creep..ie more and more are being added to the exclusions as unrealistic pressures are being placed on local state government by idealistic green pressure groups.

  • Somethink i have been worried about for the lasdt few year, is the amount of non certified customers and members of the public just walking into an agri shop and bying commercial quality herbicides and not even asking for any ID of evidence whether they can actually carry out the job. i have gone in plenty of times and i never get asked for anythink, I think this is extremely wrong not only are, non qualified people carrying out our job, but i wouldnt even dream to think of how they clean up spills and what they do with the empty canisters. =[

Amen to that David. Fully agree. Legislation already exists but is not implemented/actioned by suppliers.

I would like to see pesticides taken COMPLETELY out the realms of the domestic market/users and placed into the hands of professionals who can assess the needs and apply only what is needed to address an issue.

The knee jerk reactions/pressure applied by others with misguided/idealistic dreams do nothing to help the situation.

That has been going on for years Benjamin.

Hope it doesn't happen here any time soon or my business plan will be dead in the water

  • that my problem im trying to implement fertiliser and herbicide turf maintenance plans but, locals use the same quality stuff as i get, so i cant offer anythink better?

  • "Yet no one addresses fully, one of the major killers in modern society ....smoking... what's all that about ?"

What is "fully"? Blanket ban on smoking?

That would be "pressure groups etc picking off easy targets, with politicians looking to appease them for an easy life and re-election ?"

  • the goverment gets too much money from the tax on tobacco

  • The problems is once they got the ball rolling, in removing chemicals of our market, they would just find the next thing to remove and it would keep on going untill theres nothink left. H & S rubbish as usuall comes to mind !!
