  • hi chris, i have been using the same honda mower as you for about 7 years but am on my third mower,i like you think i would like a change but what to ?chose the honda originally for build quality and reliability,on the whole been happy,is there anything out there to better it ?so although i have not given you an alternative would be very interested in other members replies you your question.

  • If the Honda has lasted 5 years with good use, why not get another one...... it may well be intended for domestic use but its obviously up to the job. I've been using an 18" Masport..... which may well be classified as for domestic use... for 10 years with several hours use every day through the growing season. Its light enough to lift into the van, does a good cut and totally reliable. The drive to the rear roller is a simple belt and tensioner which requires minimal maintenance.

  • Thanks Geoff sounds interesting this domestic use thing is silly really

I have an old HRB425C. Only 17" but it is 14 years old and still going strong. This mower and many more of the Honda "domestic" mowers are good for professional gardeners. I also have a HRH536QX but i prefer using the smaller one most of the time.

  • Thanks Stuart says everything the dealer prob makes more profit in the hayter going to stick with honda
  • The difference between "pro" and "domestic" mowers is often very little. I picked up a non-pro 21" Asuka (same as Lawnflite and Kaaz) two years ago, without the front bumper, extra handle bracing and with slightly weaker wheels at the front, apparently. Suffice to say there have been no issues with any of these bits!

I think it's more down to the use, and the care, they get. As with the Vikings, which aren't up to commercial use, but can work if you are very careful with the way you treat them. The main cause of failures in my experience, outside of sheer wear and tear, is banging in and out of vans or down steps, never changing the oil, that sort of thing.

My next machine is going to be a Hayter, as that's what my repairer wants to work on and he carries the spares to repair it whilst I wait. I'm still undecided over the pro, or the domestic with a blade-brake clutch, as that's a real benefit for the jobs I do.

If you're worried about your dealer recommending gear based on his profit over your business needs, you need to find a new dealer!
