bare patch on box

Anyone know if Box will shoot from old wood? I took out some Leylandii in a client's garden but kept an old Box specimen about 2.5m tall. The side where the Leylandii were is bare and you can see the trunk and branches. Do you think it will green up, or should I plant something to fill the gap or grow through the Box?

thanks!

Rose

  • Rose,

It should eventually green up but the word 'eventually' is the giveaway! Without seeing it, it's hard to be specific but it might be worth pruning the whole thing back in the spring and feeding it  a bit to encourage some all-round vigour.

  • Thanks Dave, worth a try!

  • I've cut a large box down to near groundlevel before and it breaks out from the old wood. I suspect though that without a drastic prune to get things moving, your box will remain fairly bare on that side.

  • Just check that the bare branches are not actually dead wood, a small scrape with secateurs to find some green should tell you. If dead then you'll have to cut them out, or replace entirely if this is not an option.

here's a picture of the Box - nice and healthy otherwise, the problem is just that it has been growing as part of a hedge. I think I will cut back & feed in the Spring and see what happens. (Note hedgehog gap in the new fence! Wildlife friendly client :o))

  • No....... that'll never green up!!

Shame to cut it down though

  • Disagree - I think it will green up if Rose does what she's suggesting although it's going to take a few years! Box WILL shoot from old wood, I've seen it happen many times.
