  • I saw this today in the sun. In some ways I hope it is true as money can be made from it, but also lets hope its not too bad, you never know what will happen to everyone's olds!

FYI : Here is a copy of our subscription based long term forecast for the SE of England....
  • Thanks Gary - Doesn't sound too bad for us softies in the South East :-)

We are waiting on the Winter update, but currently no real warning of snow - just drier, cooler than expected.

I think the papers are winding it up, along with reporting a national shortage of grit, which if you read between the lines is not really true. Councils are now 'over-ordering' to balance their woeful efforts previously. They are clearly covering their backsides and will have the last laugh IF it gets bad, or they will have a massive stockpile of the product at our expense........

From last week, we start to recieve ice/frost alerts ready for gritting - Not normally required this early, but October has thrown a few curved balls in the recent past.

    So...we wait and see ...
  • I sincerely hope these are not the same people who predicted that last winter was going to be one of the warmest on record.... oh wait, no, that was the MET office!

No forecast is ever going to be accurate, but we do read and take the forecast into account along with some common sense and local knowledge. We can get forecasts provided down 4 chars of post code. We know some of our sites have micro-climates that only we would know about.

The other reason for reviewing and recording forecasts is the question of liability. We are able to show that we 'reacted' according the best information available (even if that info was right or wrong). In the commercial world that is key...

Lets hope it is, got me gritter end of last week and set it up over the weekend so now just need some bad weather to make it earn its keep.
  • My bones tell me it's going to be largley mild and wet in the South East. My bones are right about 80% of the time. They predicted the snow last winter, both when and how much, and the hot dry summer.

I've often wondered if people who work outside with nature, have an intuition for this kind of thing.

It would be interesting if everybody wrote their pedictions on this discussion, and see what happens.
  • Hi Graeme
Take a gamble, i feel winters aren't bad enough to justify the gear.
