A3 printer?

Can anyone recommend an affordable A3 colour printer for printing out Vectorworks drawings and images? I work on Mac. Ideally it should have high resolution and be economical with ink cartridges etc - suitable for home/office use.

Cheers

Jenny

  • I've had an Epsom 1160 now for about ten years and never had a problem with it printing off CAD and SketchUp images. Don't know if you can still buy them or if they work with Macs but you can get it's ink cheaply now even in PC World!
  • We have a Canon IX400 individual ink cartridges about £10 -£15 each depending who's got them we use it with PCs and laptops so not sure how it would work with a mac.
Pretty fair printer does what we need.
  • Hi we bought the cheapest A3 printer that also copies and scans and so far it's been great, had it about 3-4 months now. Its a Brother DCP6690CW. There is also a version that includes a fax (which we didn't need) which is slightly pricier. This machine also has separate colour cartridges so these can be changed individually. We use it primarily for Vectorworks drawings too. The one criticism I would have is that the colour reproduction is not as good as our A4 HP printer - for us that's not so important as we can hand colour over the top of any drawings if we need to make them look attractive for the client. Would definitely recommend though, and a very good price compared to others we found. Good luck!

  • Thanks all for your excellent suggestions - will investigate these further.

Caro I'm interested that you hand render on top of drawings - I currently do this as I don't have Renderworks (although considering investing as I am increasingly doing 3D work and somewhat restricted without it). Do you colour over colour print-outs or design in black and white?

  • Hi Jenny - we do both, though wouldn't hand render over a strong colour - depends what it is really. Use gradients quite a lot for broad-brush colouring, they're handy for large surface areas (paving, lawn etc). I don't use Renderworks yet, even though I bought it along with the 2010 package, because only just venturing into 3D and haven't really had time to explore it properly. Oh brave new world!
