Best weedkiller to kill off old lawn prior to returfing

I am looking to try out a new method of returfing for an upcoming job and was looking for some advice before I start.

Up until now I have generally skimmed off the old lawn, either by hand or using a turf cutter, before rotavating and laying new turf.

Mini digger fuel consumption

Landscaping searches predicted to fall in 2015 - Google Trends

I did some research this morning to establish how strong 'landscaping' searches were on Google.

2014 was indeed a good year and graph data shows last year as being the peak of three successive rises following on from the post-crash low of 2011.
