  • If you can, leave it until winter - although they're never truly dormant, their transpiration rate does slow considerably in the colder months, and that'll improve your chances of success. Whenever you do it - give them a really good soak 24 hours before you move them so they're good and turgid, and so that the root ball holds together well, move them with as large a rootball as is practical, and do it quickly - dig their new hole first, and transplant without delay. After replanting puddle them in, and hope for the best ! If its a windy site, consider whether they'll need staking to stop their roots being rocked.
  • Can anyone offer some advice on moving a small yew? 4 Ft tall
  • I think that Gardeners' World always recommend going round the rootball with a spade about 6 months before you plan to move them; chopping off some of the roots before you move them encourages the plants to send out lots of small feeding roots which will help when you replant. If you do this 6 months before you move, it gives the plant a chance to recover.

Just to add a little bit more to Andrews advice - if you can dig a small trench, just inside the extreme reach of the roots (they tend to be very fibrous in Yew - Taxus) and add some fresh compost you will end up with some lovely fine roots that are easily liberated when it comes to transplanting time and of course, these roots will also very quickly develop into their new position.
