Coronavirus personal financial survival

Hello everyone, just thought I'd post a brief tips thread in this time of financial uncertainty! Please contribute your ideas/plans/what's worked for you...

Half the battle is having some plan/written record on your incomings / outgoings, which then reduces the stress and gives something to work towards.

Basic Budget Template 2.xlsx

Hopefully that file uploads alright...It's a basic budget plan I've followed for the past 10+ years. I'd just put my income/balance in the top columns (check balance 1-2x/week) and the lower ones are expenses. Sample figures have been given. Really handy to know a forecast for the year ahead. The other columns can be edited (e.g. savings) to whatever you want, or add in other subheadings.

It may not be obvious to some but there are now policies in place that let you freeze payments on loans, mortgages and credit cards. If there's even just a bit of doubt, I'd get that sorted ASAP (3 month freeze), which will alleviate the pressure quite a bit for many.

The funny thing about the stock-pilling issue is people should be more concerned about becoming more moderate and creative in their eating habits which in itself would solve any potential shortages. But cannot expect society to be level headed, that'd be crazy :P

  • hi paul, survival is about right, as a reasonable worst case scenario this global event has the potential to pretty much end our current civilisation, this is just the start of it i think, we shall see ...

      • Thanks for feedback, hopefully you can get some use from it.  Yeah there's always ways to save with food - especially preparing your own.  Quite funny, today for lunch time (a quick supermarket meal) I had smoked salmon and a tub of potato salad...beggars can't be choosers lol. Perfect balance of protein, fat and carbs mind you. Just got to use your imagination when the usual stuff isn't around.

        • we have allotments which despite being a mess due to other committments are quite productive, even this time of year there is fresh stuff available to harvest and a great addition to store cupboard or freezer fodder. also reasonably handy with the old break barrel hw80 air rifle if it comes to it and seen plenty of road kill pheasants etc despite reduced traffic, so it could be worse

          • Glad you have some resources. It's nice to have backups, something my wife and I took for granted until the pandemic. We've always bought stuff in bulk anyway so had plenty on hand before the outbreak to last months - if you need any eggs our chooks can supply 10+ / day on the 2 year's worth of grains and mealworms we have lol!

On a more serious note, I think it's important not to encourage dooms day thinking, that's only feeding the "fear of the unknown" and making people panic buy.

I see this as a winding down of the old financial system in preparation for the new,at some point in the near future there's going to be a reset but before we get there things could get very difficult for a lot of people.

I'd be thinking about allocation of assets and minimizing the amount of cash left in banks and maybe clearing debts if possible. Back in 2008 - 2010 during the last crisis precious metals performed well and could be a useful hedge against hyperinflation should it occur.

The new system, once it comes online will most likely be in the form of crypto currency and blockchain technology, these are currently volotile markets but certainly a fast emerging one.

If you have access to land and can go self sustained in anyway then this would be the ultimate way to go,apart from that a good supply of essentials to see you through challenging times ie loss of power or the services being stretched beyond capacity.
