Worn Goal Mouth

I mow a school games field.  It is for a small primary school, but the facilities are there for the public to use at other times too.  It is never going to look like Wembley.  The area around the goal mouth is worn away continually.  Once, about two years ago, I bought a deep turf remover, and used it to replace the turf infront of the goal.  With a bit of seeding to grade it in to the surrounding turf this worked, but it took a lot of time to do, and the school were prepared to pay for it.  Everything looked great for a few months months, but quickly wore away.  The goals are fixed, and cannot be moved.

As I say, this is not a first rate pitch, but I would appreciate some advice about a mixture of sand/soil to put down to bring the worn areas level again.  A mixture that wouldn't turn to mud, and might take some seed, especially if I could keep people off it for a while.

The picture shows the worst goal mouth.  The goal is about half-size.

Thanks, in anticipation,

Neil

70/30 sand soil mix and a tetraploid grass seed

    • Thanks

  • Before topdressing it I'd try to loosen the soil a bit as I imagine part if the problem is also compaction.

Loosen it a lot, like you say, a goal mouth will have a goal keeper jumping up and down on the spot in the rain etc. Dig it over before levelling it and mixing in the 70/30.

The Turf Teq Power Rake would be a good tool for loosening the soil. Have a quick look at https://youtu.be/OFb_uXROvfI.

    • Sorry for the delay in reading and replying.

Yes, I'll definitely try to loosen up the soil first.

Thanks Paul, I have looked at these power rakes before, but I don't think that I can hire them around here (near Carlisle and Penrith).

I think the nearest on to you is Basically Tool Hire in Dalkeith! You could try Brandon Hire, but I don't believe they have one up your way. Tell the guy at Penrith Tool Hire it's time he bought one wink

  • Thanks for all the advice on this.  I have found a photo from when I patched it up in October 2001, using a tool to remove 4 inch deep bits of turf from elsewhere.  I suggested to the school that they get a temporary goal to move around, especially for when members of the public have access, and I could fence off the permanent goal temporarily.  It never happened, and is now back to where it was.  I'll suggest that I repair it again, but keep replenishing the area with the 70/30 sand/soil suggested.  12910116485?profile=RESIZE_930x
