Winter Jasmine

Just stumbled over this pic and thought it was too good not to share. I'd love to try this - any idea how difficult it would be? I've only ever seen it flopping all over the place!

  • Could it maybe be Forsythia intermedia?
  • I think the pic is from Japan, so I suspect it is very old jasmine that has been carefully tended for decades! But if I could get that result with forsythia intermedia, I'd be happy. Not sure it would look as good though.
  • i imagen if you grow a few shrubs and coppice them evry other year for 5 years then let that growth grow on and in a way pollard the new growth it may work, my gran has a forsythia that is just a huge yellow blob in the spring as it is quite an age.
  • I would say that that is forsythia. What a beautiful show!

  • I have just shown the picture to Kev who I work with and he reckons it could be a Mimosa, as they flower so abundantly, also they are very popular in Japan.
  • Looking at the shadow length and the shirtsleeves, I'd say that isn't winter, so not Winter Jasmine ! Its Forsythia.
  • Cornus officinalis or mas? The up-market forsythia

    Mimosa/Acacia - no- evergreen

  • Managed to find out the pic was taken at the Summer Palace in Beijing - but that doesn't really help with identifying the plant.

I'm 99% certain it's Forsythia and with the Weeping Willow just coming into leaf in the background, I'd say the timing is spot on.

One think I think gives it away is the flow spikes on last year's wood.
