Welcome to the club =] both mine were strimmer accidents, first just as we completed the job i saw a few weeds and yes strimmed them only to hear my partner scream as i look back a french window was breaking up as i watched in horror, second was a regular, they had just fitted new french windows and yes again same thing but i was strimming edging. The good new is i only had to pay £150.00 for each, yes it stung but insurance excess is £250.00 for me, the only advice i can give is watch the direction of the debris when it exits your machine and plan to avoid flying debris, lower revs with strimmers and check the area prior to mowing or strimming or if your really close place thin 8x4 sheets of chipboard against the windows or doors, again accident will happen.
It may seem impractical when racing from job to job to have sheets of ply but I have been so grateful to hear a thwack bang rather than thwack ching on many occasions.
I learnt the hard way after not moving a board along once and until the lads that work for me do the same I don't think they appreciate why I am so vigilant against such things.
I did meet an old retired gardener once who had an add on that basically added another layer to the mower casing. after cutting the side panels off a dead mower he added brackets which gave him an extra shield either side. adding about ten inches to the width of his mower but they sat slightly lower. With two bolts he could run the mower both ways along an edge without fear. and even said it cut down on how many clippings blew onto a terrace.
Never saw it at work so he might of been the biggest window smasher of them all!!?
Hope it helps
