Will this tree be damaged?

No photos but I have a client whose neighbour has hammered in a batten between his fence and her tree. Utterly pointless, but my question is will a slim birch trunk (4inch) be damaged by having two large galv nails in it? If removed will it heal up ok? My instincts are that it may have stunted continued growth in either case.

  • It won't kill the tree, but the excess zinc levels on a galvanism nail will probably kill the cambium for a few mm around the nail - Then over time the tree will simply grow around the wound - It will probably not stunt it in any noticeable way - that said Id remove the batton asap - the Birch will be adding .25 to .5 a inch Diam a year if its young, and will press against it pushing the fence away.

  • bloody resilient things trees are
