Which way to go?

Morning all,I am looking at expanding the business and need a little advise please. I currently contract for a company in Scotland who I am quite happy working for and have an excellent working agreement with. However the work that I do for them seems to be growing by starting to come into to me direct. This is something I have spoken to them about and they are happy as the work would not have come their way anyway. In order to carryout some of the jobs i am being asked to have CHAS or Construction Line status which I know nothing about apart from the fact is around £250 -£300 start off fee then £180 per year ish.Could anyone tell me which is the best option to go with, or even another option. These processes seem to me to be a way of just taking money from people for nothing back apart from black mailing you to have their accreditations because they have told everyone these are the must have qualifications. Many thanksMarkwww.mwjones.co.uk

Im SAFEcontractor accredited and was constructionline aswell. Gave up the constructionline this year as it wasnt working for my line of work. CHAS and SAFEcontractor are similar, but SAFE is more widely used now, i think Gary RK is/ was both chas and safe worth pm-ing him for more info
  • I think is a simple matter of weighing up how much profit you are willing to lose per job if you choose to become chas accredited, if you carry out the chas work and still make a decent mark up after the bills go out , then in my book your doing good and i would go for the accreditation, but if this is not the choice you are willing to take then dont do the jobs.

Its got nothing to do with losing profit on jobs Benjamin. !!! Thats like saying how much will i spend on that mower cause its going to lose me profit on every job i do. Good grief why oh why do some companies think skills and accreditations are money costs with no return on the investment, what absolute nonesense :-(
Ps: that statement is not personal at you Ben
  • Brian i did say

I will admit that yes it do allow you to access more jobs and better looking avenues, but only if it pays you back, because at the end of the day most of us are all trying to operate a businesses that makes money.

  • We are SafeContractor, Human Focus approved and Contractor Plus and all make us money. They're designed to accredit companies with health and safety administration and awareness which should help in branching into the commercial sector and show perspective clients, your serious, not that not having these accreditations means your not serious but more that commercial clients these days will require an accredited company.

It will help you structure your company which for a growth purpose is essential.

  • Best get saving and typing over the winter then to get accredited. Currently trying to do a rospa course to.

Has anyone come across any kind of funding which may help with these kind of things?
  • May be LJN should set up a system.
