Which stihl combi /

I currently have an 11yr old fs55, & I'm thinking of upgrading, it will be mostly used for hedgecutting.
Not had a 4mix before all my over stihl stuff is 2 stroke, not keen on having to carry an extra fuel can around with me, but as I have stihl combi tools I can't change makes.

Why an extra can ? - fuel is no different, it is still a 2 stroke mix - only recommendation is to use Green Stihl oil (the Pro stuff)

  • I use the green stuff in all my stihl tools, get a km130, i have 3 and they take loads of abuse
  • So I can use the green stuff in the 2 strokes ?, that's good news, though I have only yesterday opend a new litre of 2 stroke...

4 mix is the same apart from checking the valve clearances every 50 or so hours (20 initially) and it's recommended to use green fuel as it prevents the valves sticking and closing the gap, supposedly.

  • I just use the green in everything. Slight extra cost, but it's a tiny amount over a year.

On the subject of the valve clearances, I want to try to do this myself. It looks simple, do you get the kit with the feeler gauge and new gaskets from the dealer? Or, do they refuse to sell them as it's losing them work....

  • I use the green in every thing, Stihl and non Stihl, Good quality oil won't harm.

  • I've asked the same question over on arbtalk, & they realy don't like the 4 cycle stihls over there. Its also been suggested, that when the current crop of 4cycles are sold off, they will "re=introduce" 2 stroke engines across the range. Anyone else heard this ?

No, but why would they do this ?

Could be 'pub talk' or wishful thinking that has become accepted...?

Unless they have further perfected stratified 2 stroke engines, emisions was the killer for piston ported induction. US regs epecially almost ruled out 2 stroke motorbikes, followed by small engined power tools.

I'd suggest the reason Arbs dont like them is mostly down to weight increase and power delivery

  • Thanks Gary.

  • I've never found the need to replace any gaskets...... you can use an ordinary set of feeler gauges......just trim down the relevant gauge with a pair of sharp scissors so that it fits in the gap ok.
