Which? Gardening Survey report

Thought this might be of interest. The Jan/Feb 2010 edition of Which? Gardening has the results of a survey of their members that they conducted last June on help in the garden. 6,222 out of 23,911 of their members responded.

They found the following.

Lawn Care:

costs an average of £12 an hour, with weed/feed treatments costing from £14, depending on lawn size.

General maintenance:

Average cost around £12 an hour, but £25 per hour "isn't uncommon", specially in London

Tree Pruning:

Costs around £18 an hour for heavy-duty tree pruning. Says major work may take a couple of days.

Overall 80% were happy with the work they'd had done and what it cost.

  • £12 / hour for garden maintenance seems low to me, as if £25 / hour isn't uncommon there must be quite a lot of people charging significantly less than £12 / hour to balance. The same with tree pruning, it would be interesting to see whether this was just arboricultural operations or included hedge pruning, I assume the latter as otherwise the costs wouldn't reflect the training / equipment and insurance needed.

Unfortunately there's not a lot of detail in the article. Which? recommends that you go for a tree specialist from an arborist association, with assurances that they work to BS3998.

But that doesn't mean that the people who responded to the survey had done this.

    Hedgecutting isn't mentioned at all.

There is a case study: one apple tree felled, one apple reduced by 30%, one hazel cut down to fence level and one amelanchier reshaped took 3 contractors 2-3 hours and cost £322. Which I work out as around £35 per man hour minimum.

Not sure exactly how useful the survey is to anyone, let alone Which? readers.

I have not read the Which? aricle but from what Helen is saying, it appears to be rather too loosely put together and lacks accuracy.

I would hope that the information across the LJ brand is more useful to researchers?
  • i presume of the 25% of people that responded to the questionnaire ;

were the one's that have the time - - ie nothing else to do !!

doctors,lawyers,self-employed, businessmen, chief inspectors, retired? would not probably bother as they dont want to bother doing their garden (my clients),

they want a top-quality job done / insured and reliable service : £20 per/hr with top equip NO LESS.

so what im saying is the ones who had time to reply , had time to search for a much cheaper option.

my Lord , if 1 hr of fertilising @ £14p/h wouldnt make you bankrupt ............have you seen how much spray/powder @cost you can use in an hour and at £300 for COSH it should be over £20+ p/h !!!!
