Which products do you use for which job?

I'm looking to restock my inventory of pesticides and herbicides and wondered what people use and recommend for the following situations.

Lawn weed control (broad spectrum)

Lawn moss control

Lawn feed

Selective weed/grass killer for borders

Total weed killers

Knotweed

All would preferably be delivered via a knapsack. I know there is a fair amount on here on the subject but might be useful as a survey perhaps?

    Hello Peter,

There are a wide range of products available for your needs – everyone will have their own favourite but it’s a good question to ask. Just like beer, too much of one thing is not healthy so a mix of weedkillers/ active ingredients will prevent any resistance build-up.

Lawn weed control - (broad spectrum): Polax - contains florasulam & fluroxypyr - which is especially good for difficult lawn weeds such as; mouse-ear, speedwell, yarrow etc. Now we also have Dicophar a replacement for Tribute - which is a nice mix of four actives so a great all-rounder

Lawn moss control: You cannot beat Sul-fe (iron sulphate ) – soluble powder, very economical – 21% iron – almost instant blackening while you spray so it's great for customers to see that something has been done

Lawn feed;   Powder/ liquid? Slow-release / standard release? The debate rages.. but a compound granular product range such as Amvista the seaweed + fert liquid Maxicrop range are really popular.

Contractors – slow release liquids or granules from our Vitax range provide excellent value for money

Selective weed/grass killer for borders: You might struggle here – most selectives target broad-leaved plants not monocotyledons (grasses) so border plants are at risk. Really you need a glyphosate to minimise any residue or movement of excess spray through soil - but use a spray shield or a weedwiper for ultimate control

Total weed killers: New Roundup Pro-Bio for ultimate – up to date clean label glyphosate or Hammer – instant knockdown in 24hrs with systemic action to kill the root so results are seen quickly albeit the actual control takes as long as a standard glyphosate.

Knotweed: Do you mean Japanese Knotweed? For Japanese Knotweed Roundup 450 – super strength glyphosate – used in a stem injection system – best results when treated after flowering. It is also best to follow any guidelines on application on gov.uk website - it a great site and gives very clear guidance.

As ever choices are personal and can come down to cost - so it is also worth looking at application rates too to make sure you are making cost effective decisions.

Sorry it's a bit of an essay but hope this helps - happy to take you through what we have discussed whenever 0800 032 6262
