A couple of well spaced and timed cuts early in the year - before the season really takes off - will also help the lawn develop and unwind from its near dormant slumber and ensure that you and your machinery are not overworking when the growth gathers pace.

Last cut of 2009 was in November, Newcastle upon Tyne, but didn't get started this year until well into April
As Phil has already said - cut as appropriate to the local conditions. However there is a mind set that you stop at the end of October and resume in April but most clients should see the benefit of a monthly cut when appropriate. With the change in the seasons hey ho it may be a very mild winter who knows!
