When do you all stop grass cutting?

Intrested to know when you all stop grass cutting in different parts of the country. I'm in North lanarkshire and am expecting to cut till the end of October, but being my first season not sure if the customers will stay on board that long, but do know that i cut my own grass in November, I think the general public think that grass stops growing in September for some unknown reason.

Cut as appropriate Alan and if the conditions are such that a lawn needs a trim in December to tidy it up then I have no qualms about doing so. A light winter cut can also help keep worms at bay by hoovering up the organic matter that they feed on.

A couple of well spaced and timed cuts early in the year - before the season really takes off - will also help the lawn develop and unwind from its near dormant slumber and ensure that you and your machinery are not overworking when the growth gathers pace.
  • Cheers for that Phillip, was also thinking that i will let customers know that i will be scarrifying in March and would they like that done let me know, will give me an earlier start hopefully.

  • Hi Alan I was cutting in March 09 to Jan 10 - picking up leaves etc, just follow mother nature she knows best! all helps to keep customers gardens looking great.
  • Hi alan we are based in Norwich
cut well into November last year
  • Hi Alan

Last cut of 2009 was in November, Newcastle upon Tyne, but didn't get started this year until well into April
  • Four years ago, we could of cut about 75% of all the lawns on Christmas Eve.

As Phil has already said - cut as appropriate to the local conditions. However there is a mind set that you stop at the end of October and resume in April but most clients should see the benefit of a monthly cut when appropriate. With the change in the seasons hey ho it may be a very mild winter who knows!

  • I think that what folks have said is a good guide, talk to your customers and say it will very much depend on weather conditions and if they want you to continue beyond october to let you know as you are willing to go with mother nature. I regretted not cutting late last year and not cutting early this year...........just makes life harder. So talk to your customers and go with good old mother nature.
  • We start second week March and always end second week November-no exceptions- and there's a good reason for finishing then. Most of our clients are in heavily wooded areas and by third week November the leaf fall is too much for a mower and that's when we start leafclearing with a blower. Crafty clients try to get us to mow their lawn just to clear the leaves which, apart from being impossible, takes much longer than a normal cut and we're on a fixed price for lawnmowing but hourly rate for leaf clearing.
