Whats your philosphy, Gun or Binoculars?

With the snow outside I find myself feeding the birds, and subsequently squirrels and mice, and if I investigate in the morning, footprints may well inform me of larger nocturnal visitors. I like to take a pragmatic approach and try to enjoy or at least accept all comers to my garden, and see it as a welcome challenge to steer a garden to it's optimum, I am often surprised how others find gardening to be a battleground where nature has to be conquered and suppressed. So do you rush for binoculars or a gun.

No need for bino's for me i can watch them feed at the food i put out from my kitchen window, they are just a few feet away from me. Loved birds and nature from a young age and still enjoy their company every day
  • let nature live in your garden is my opinion, we get all sorts in ours, wood peckers, robins, tits of all sorts, chaffinch, gold finch, nut hatch, and a jay often visits, badgers, fox and hedgehogs, not so many hedgehogs now as one of my border terriers has put a sad end to their life, not proud of that by the way

  • wildlife brings a garden to life!

  • Gun, for the grey squirrels and wood pigeons that hoik all the food as soon as hits the ground or bird table, and reduce the feeding opportunities for the more timid and ultimately more needy birds.

  • Hmmm. We get the odd Muntjac, squirrels everywhere, plenty of pigeons, loads of magpies, occasional seagulls from the tip 10 miles away, and a lot of kites. There's not a lot of hope for the smaller birds, who need the food most. The neighbour's cats get most of the smaller ones as well.

Nature isn't all good, I'd happily shoot most of what's in our garden to give the songbirds a chance!

  • i don't know, is it legal to shoot foxes or parakeets?

i've got an idea parakeets are fair game.......

  • If I am not going to eat it, I'm not going to kill it. And I am definitely not going to eat it.

  • don't be so rash. parakeet is probably quite nice in a stir fry
