What Mowers...?

Hi All

I'm new to LJN and new to the industry. Just starting out and would appreciate a bit of advise on what mower to buy (I know it's been covered before) I will be offering a lawn mowing service to start with so wanted to get a good commercail grade mower that won't let me down. I've been a looked at the Weibangs at the local dealer having read the reviews on here. I was considering either the Wiebang Legacy 48 Pro BBC variable spd or to go for the larger Legacy 56 Pro Variable. Most of the work will be small/medium sized residential lawns, so wasn't sure whether the 56 might be a bit too large for the smaller gardens. I don't really want to buy two mowers to start with (I already have a 19" Lawnflite which will do for a back up if required) I know it's been mentionned before, but the Weibangs do seem heavy, what are they like to use once moving...? I know there are cheaper brands out there, is it worth paying the extra for the Weibang with it's 3yr warranty.

The other thought was go for the Legacy 48 now, then if I do find I need a larger mower go for a Masport RRSP 22, they seem very good value. Anybody had any experience of them..?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Chris

    Hi Chris

I started off with a small masport rotorola around 8 years ago - cracking mower, but I found parts for it ( mainly the blade tips ) could be difficult to source. I tended to keep spare tips in stock for when I needed them in the end.

No experience of the weibangs, as their dealers are a bit far from me. Not sure if that's any help to you !

    • Thanks Mark

I'm quite fortunate that I have both Masport and Weibang dealers close by, so I'd hope spares/maintenace should be OK. I know there's a big price differnce between the two, but I have heard the Masports' are fairly bombproof.

      Thanks for the reply.

      • Hi Andrew

Thanks for the reply. I'll take a look at Gardencare mowers. I hear what you're saying about the one size fitting all (I know it won't) I might have to bite the bullet and get a 19" & 22"

        Thanks again

        Chris

    • I can vouch for the Masports too........ been using an 18" Masport Rotarola for years + I've a couple of spare ones in the garage which I've picked up on Ebay. Spares are easy to get hold of.... never had a problem with blade tips..... always on ebay + there's cheap ones from China now at £6 a pair.  The drive is a simple belt with a tensioner..... the belts go on for ever.  Also very light..... easy to pick up to put in the van... no ramps needed.

    Hi Chris,

The problem with one size fits all is that it doesn't! Also, you've not got customers yet by the sound of it, and so you need to decide on what type of mowing you'll do also. Eg 4 wheel mulching, 4 wheel pickup (light stripes) or roller pickup (heavier stripes). Additionally, you may end up with some big variations in lawn size, unless you turn work away.

I started out with an old hayter 41, then added a Gardencare mower before moving to commercial grade machinery:

    https://www.cheapmowers.com/acatalog/Gardencare-LMX56SP-22-in-Cut-4...

The good thing about it was it's lightweight, has a rubber strip for light striping and also mulches if need be. So I used for around 18 months, during that period was able to work out whats needed from a better position of customer sizes etc and had some cashflow to support the bigger purchases.

Toro would do something similar to the gardencare, but slightly more robust.

    • Thanks Andrew. I think I will end up buying two mowers. I'm going to take a look at the NEW Hayters as well...

  • Hi Chris

I had the Weibang 48 Pro BBC for two and a half years. Never let me down. Sold it this year as i'd had enough of the weight, but most members on here seem fine with the weight. Once it's moving it's no issue at all. I'm probably just geeting lazy in my old age. Not had a Masport though I used to know a gardener who used one and he always raved about it. I used a Cobra roller mower for two years and that was only £400 and it was cracking, though it wouldn't be up to all day every day mowing. I'm currently using one of the new Hayter pro's and very happy with it but early days yet. All the best with your decision.

    • Hi

That was the other one I was going to throw into the mix, the New Hayter Pro. I've heard/read differing reviews on Hayter, price-wise they are in the same bracket as the Weibang so will be interesting to see how they compare.

      Thanks again.

      Chris

  • I have used a massport 22” roller, I thought it had good collection even in damp conditions and was very light, I don’t think you would find a rear roller mower as light. One thing I didn’t like about it was sometimes when I engaged the drive in the damp the roller just spun and needed a push to get it going.

I have lifted a weibang 4 wheeler and thought it felt good and like a quality machine and I would be tempted to go for a rear roller model but the weight would put me off although I have only read the weight and have never seen one in the flesh

    • Thanks Adam. The Weibang is heavy, 65KG for a 48 BBC, with the masport 22" rear roller coming in at 46KG so a big difference. Big price difference too...
