Last week I went to an electrical trade show and tool fair at a Midlands football club, there was only half the exhibitors there compared to pre-Covid shows with some notable previous exhibitors missing, which surprised many visitors.
It seems to be the way of the world now that live events are struggling to attract participants.
It was the same with a recent motorcycle show. We have friends that exhibit at the pre Christmas shopping shows. To me the economics don't add up. It costs them £5000 for a minute stand, then electrics, lights, furniture (not that they would need much) are all extra. They have to put themselves up in a hotel for 3 or 4 nights...another £1000. So that is a minimum of £6000, they then have to recoup that in sweater sales (in their case) - that is a heck of A lot of sweaters to even get near break even, let alone a profit!! I think the age of such things is gone
That 5 grand to stand event is the type where only the organisers make money, most exhibitors will be large companies using as a form of advertising rather than profiting from sales on the day, including being able to put pictures of their stand on social media etc, which their online audience likes to see. As for motorcycle shows, there is an Auto Jumble near me which basically a monthly car boot sale and usually extremely busy with 100's of sellers and several thousand punters. Not at all posh or upmarket and a lot of second hand goods of course but really good atmosphere and plenty of cash changing hands
