Vaxhaul Combo

Does anyone on LJN have a combo they operate out of?I am selling my transit as i need to free up some money and have been offerd a combo by a mate whos also my mechanic.I guess I want to know if they are easy to live with and work from. It has a roof rack and when i have the spare cash i may get a towbar and a small trailer.

  • its an 05 my transit is a 53. its not one of the old rust bucket combos. it is a realy nice van too.
  • Hi Kieran ,I had a combo for about a year or so before went up a couple of years in reg, found them a good small van, could fit usual tools and barrows in it no prob, was a 2000 yr model ( back in 2006 when i had it) van 1.7 diesel. I still see it around too ! working for a tarmacadam co, now she is!!
Had a tow bar for carrying usual extras, good on diesel,
no problems with it apart from bit of rust (treatable). Have a transit connect now(great van), just little bit bigger in back .

  • I used to have escorts and they were fine, just had to jugle stuff about in them to make it all fit. The one im getting is a 1.3 twin cam its aparently qite nippy!

Ive used a 08 plate on hire a few times and for a small van found it good and cheap on fuel, the hire firm rekoned they were proving reliable. As mentioned the old style are rot buckets.
  • hi i had a 05 1.3 diesel combo for 3 years and its crap will not pull any weight and hated a trailer on the back had 6 gearboxs done under warranty night mare , when i sold it it only had 66k , if you only use it for light work great and i mean light , i used to cary a mower strimmer hedge trimmer and tow a trailer 750kg with no more than 4 sacks of grass cutings ie 1 ton sacks 1/2 full ,they are great in the snow and get 40 mpg but dont like hard work keep the transit its what i moved up to
  • I'm running the Opel version out here "on Campo" but it's the windowed version which not ideal for your purposes. However, it's six years old and gets well abused. I fold down the back seats and load it up with logs/rubbish/building blocks and my rotavator (not all at the same time :-) It's the 1.7 which I think is an Isuzu engine. The power is adequate and it's very economical. It handles the rough terrain quite well and is a good drive on the road. I agree that the 1.3 wouldn't have enough grunt.
  • I run a 1.7 02 reg combo and transits, you will miss the space if you have been used to a transit.
I just use it as a runabout now, doing quotes and the like so just has a few stone/gravel samples in the back.
Can't bring myself to sell it though as it is so economical and nippy around town.

Couldn't use it in place of the transit though just not enough room.

  • See what I mean, not a lot of room.
Still, might be enough. Was ok for a while.
  • Thanks for al the comments, Im hoping that I will be back on my feet next year so will get a transit or trafic then. My transit was like the tardis, it was amasing with what you could fit in it. I guess ill have to go back to my old ways with how i used to work from an escort.

    Thanks guys.
