Van - Is a Service required this year?

Hi Guys

A quick question:

I serviced my van last year and all kinds of things got fixed and I walked away with a £600 plus bill.

The van is running beautifully and I have done just under 5,000 miles since last service.

Do you think I can get away without having a service this year? Maybe just an oil change and maybe filter change? The van did sit most days parked up from November until March.

I am just being tight, but dont want to waste money where its not needed. The service light has come on but i think its because a year has passed since last service.

Its a VW Caddy, Diesel. About 8 years old now. Mot is due mid April.

So what is your verdict?

Thanks

Daniela

  • I would have Oil, Oil Filter, Fuel Filter and Air filter changed. A short service as some places call it. I would always have these done every year or 10,000 miles.

Sometimes you may need things like brake fluid changed or other fluids to?

I get a full service every 12 months with the MOT, think its costs around £150.00, worth it in my opinion as we all rely on our vans so much. I do around 15,000 miles a year though! i would have a interim service (short service) which covers all the main bits if you have only done 5,000 odd miles

Just an oil and and all filters change would suffice. But as its been a year you really should change the oil and oil filter at the very least.

  • OK, thanks for your input guys. I will book it in for a mini service and the MOT at the same time. Thankfully there is now a Sainsbury opposite. So I can sit there and eat cake, drink coffee and read or knit.I guess there is a silver lining to everything.

    • Its a fact that the short runs cause a lot more wear and tear on a vehicle than long fast runs so its certainly worth doing the oil/filter..... its pretty straightforward to do so you could even have a go yourself and save even more money. If it's running well, I'm sure you you'll get away with just the minimum here.

      • Well I am sure they are going to tell me if anything extra needs doing. They always do call before and say if it is absolutely imperative or if it can still wait a little.

I'd get whatever service the book says is due for the mileage it's at.
It's cheaper than mending it when it breaks!
My truck has to go in 650 miles for its first service it's only 8 months old but nearly 12k in the clock!
    • Service booklet does not say. Just has pages for service 1 to 10 and a few additional pages for garage comments.

      • PRO
The garage will be able to find out what's due.
I don't know how many miles it's done in total but don't delay timing belt/chain replacement if it's due because if it breaks the engine is in the bin!
Oil and filters will probably be enough though!
        • in total it has done 73,444. The toothed belt was changed last year at 69,000 at the service.
