Van break-ins

Hello there,

I've been following 'Vans Under Attack' on Twitter recently - they are trying to raise awareness of the faults with various different vans security systems and it's scary how quickly and easily thieves can steal the lifeblood of your business.

My van was fitted out with new deadlocks from Sussex Installations last year (mobile team came to my house) and I sleep a little better now (they have a great Youtube channel showing the upgrades available).

Door-folding, Citroen/Peugeot/Fiat side door opening and Ford Tibbe-Key picking seem to be the biggest threats at the moment :(

No affiliation to any of the companies mentioned, just trying to help spread the message. Forewarned is forearmed.

  • Most thefts seem to happen at night................. just don't leave the expensive stuff in the van overnight is the simplest solution.

  • Thanks for the post Ross. Good to have a reminder of security when it's so easy to become complacent. Sorry to hear of your misfortunes John - gutting experience I am sure. Slam locks are great but just remember to not leave your van keys inside!

I agree not to leave expensive gear inside for long periods such as overnight but if you have a sign written van it's an advert for a would be thief. They don't know you have nothing of value inside, meanwhile they will knacker up the van doors putting it out of service and causing loss of revenue. Anything that's a clear deterrent to make the thieve's life harder may mean they ignore/move on from your van if it's got extra security visible.

This is disgusting. I can't even afford a modern van - not that it matters! You can easily get into any van it would seem from those twitter posts. I'd suggest brutal sentencing for the culprits, so bad that they'd never consider it again. I can't put into words how vile these people are, taking away someones livelihood they've no doubt broke their back earning over the years.

    Filth!
  • I am very careful where I park. I also get to know the parking attendants & wardens.

I have been followed home in the Winter. Unfortunately they backed out before I got home as I had a reception committee waiting.

I also use a simple battery alarm made by Doberman. It has a PIR & a remote. It's especially useful when I am working at the back of a house & the van is out front.

    • If parking on the road, i always park with the side door to the curb side, that way they cant pull up along side and chuck your gear from one van to the other, which is a popular way of thieving from vans.

Also every piece of kit is cabled and padlocked to eye bolts in the van, so no quick smash and grab even if they do get in.

and a battery PIR in the back, obviously not linked to vans electrics, so if they have some device to open the locks, dissable the alarm etc, the PIR still goes off in their ear!
