I have roughly 30 m sq of york stone paving to sell and wondered what a realistic value per m2 is. They are various sizes and thickness and all square or rectangular (no crazy paving).

Also, has anyone any idea of the best way to sell it? Its not like you can post it.

  • I too recently secured a contract for a new cobblestone driveway but the existing surface was york stone crazy paving there was a little over 160 sqm of it! the customer was convinced he could get £45 a sqm resale for it and at the last second before work commenced decided the sale of this (that i had to arrange) would fund his project...

this was after 4 site visits and several design changes, the best price i was able to get for him at short notice was £6 a square meter, needless to say this was well under his expectations and the contract has been prosponed..

i too would be very interested in the real value, tho on my enquiries www.garden-antiques.net cunninghamstone seemed to be the only people in my area interested in the stone, he did say that the full york paving can fetch more..

there always seems to be a bit for sale on ebay?

Thanks for the reply adam. Yes, some people put too high a value on such things. I just want a fair price where everyone is happy. Will check out ebay. I would usually avoid reclamation yards as the price they offer is usually ridiculously low. Best to cut out the middle man i think. I could even deliver if it was local.

  • Stuart,

Is this new York stone or reclaimed? I occasionally have both kicking around and although the new usually goes onto the next project the reclaimed is so variable that I sell it on Ebay. If you go this route sell it in 3 x 10 sq m lots rather than the whole 30 metres in one lot. Many people  don't want 30 metres (but if they do they can bid on more than one lot.)

The value is whatever the market on that week dictates. Bear in mind that somebody is going to have to travel to fetch it, hire or borrow some sort of commercial vehicle and then spend time and effort loading and unloading it. So it's never going to make anything like the figures you see on the internet from the suppliers in the North. I put it on with no reserve and let whoever wants it the most that week decide how much it's worth.

If you approach a salvage yard they already know you're going to struggle with this so they'll offer you peanuts.

Adam, York stone crazy paving is way out of date now and rarely seen on anything approaching a decent landscaping scheme. Thank the Lord!. £6 a metre is a fair result - I'd be happily shipping it off at that price. I pay about £45 for new riven fettled York stone flags! It's a shame your client didn't do their own investigations rather then dumping his ridiculous expectations onto your lap - that was a crappy thing to do.

I tended to keep surplus/waste/reclaimed material for smaller jobs and then innovate to find a creative way of using it.

Why not cut the stone into 100mm wide slithers so they can be used to face up a wall set within brick quoins ?
Can also be used in random lines (edges facing upwards to form the paving surface) to create a pathway.

Have a look at this picture. It's just rubble but it's extremely effective: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Limestone_rubble_wall_with_brick_...

Imaging 30-50mm courses of the paving edges.
  • If you in Leeds / West yorkshire pm me, I know a couple of places which will buy it at £20 per sqm if its reasonable quality. Obviously the thicker and more square the higher the price. If its under 30mm your prob looking at 10-15 per m.

I doubt you will get more than £20 at the moment, the merchants I know in Leeds are swimming in the stuff. Offering as low as £45 selling to clear.

Thanks for your suggestions everyone. The stone is reclaimed, is in what i would call good condition and is of uniform shape. Thickness varies, but it is all 2 inch plus. I would love to keep it but i need some cash quickly to buy some machinery.

What qualities does it need to be classed as good quality within the trade?

  • Can you lay it to make it look nice? And how hard would that be. I find that most reclaimed stone tends to be used on jobs where the customer wants an instant "aged" look to the job. Ive Sent you a PM with the details of the places which may buy your stone.

  • We will buy all yorkstone paving products including flagstones and crazy paving, cobblestones, and walling. Please contact us regarding yorkstone paving
