Use of Red Diesel

Can anyone clarify / pass comment on whether ;

- you can have red diesel in the tank of a diesel powered Shredder/Chipper while it is being towed on the public highway?

- Ithe prohibition on use of red diesel only related to a vehicle "consuming" it while on the public highway ?

- you can legally run it on red diesel no matter where it's being used (ie at road side while working) ?

This has got be one subject that they could not have made more complex if they tried :-(

  • Hello Gary, interesting question,

found this on arbtalk, it would appear most of the chaps on there run their chippers on red :-)

    http://arbtalk.co.uk/forum/general-chat/22104-does-anyone-run-their...

  • its an 'agricultural' machine. if it runs on red-diesel surely upon sale : 'it' or the dealers would state ' do not use red - diesel'.

    can u track a mini-digger or dumper up a road, a tractor.

if something is being 'towed' , it is not being propelled under its own power.

All farm machinery / on or off-road run on red diesel.

red -diesel or 'pink , 'cherry' is not advised on more advanced / modern vehicle engines as its not as refined. i hope this helps.

  • all machinery can run on red unless its a jcb thats driven between jobs then it needs to be white diesel.

  • no problem on towed plant, there might be a problem if its a self propelled chipper running on the public highway, i know the tractor hedge cutting contractors have to use white if on the highway but can use red if its there own hedge. grass cutting contractors are supposed to use white if they run on the highway

Many thanks for the responses clarifying situation & Interesting reading on arbtalk.

What a minefield of allowances and exemptions....
  • there is a daily limit of about 3-4 miles before you have to use white diesel with any vehicle used on the road exceptions are road construction equipment so dumpers, rollers and excavators

  • YES! It's only Diesel Engined Road Vehicles that need to run on DERV (hence the acronym!) every other diesel engine can run on rebated (red) diesel. Exceptions for construction and agricultural vehicles within work sites.

I found this really useful document this morning setting out all the agri/horti exceptions and was aimed at Council's Amenity Services. Quite interesting...
